TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 75 FGCU men's tennis wraps up its spring break trip, travelling to Tampa for the USF Invite. While in Tampa, the Eagles will have a rematch with Troy Friday at 2:30 p.m. before taking on No. 23 Penn State Sunday at 12 p.m.
LAST TIME OUTFGCU faced Troy and Georgia Southern last weekend in Statesboro, Ga., with the Eagles coming away with a split. Against the Trojans, FGCU claimed the doubles point, with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, however the Eagles would drop four singles matches, falling 4-2 in the match.
Against Georgia Southern, FGCU trailed 1-0 after the doubles point but rebounded to take the match 4-3.
Javier Fernandez (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB) and
Andres Alfonzo (Hollywood, Fla./Texas Christian University) earned wins at No. 6 and No. 2 singles, respectively to give FGCU a slight edge in the overall match early in singles play. After a loss at No. 4 singles,
Ezequiel Cerrini (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla./Homeschool) tied the match at 3-3, winning his match at No. 3 singles. With the match on the line,
Ricky Ventura (Barcelona, Spain/University of Barcelona) claimed the No. 1 singles win with a three-set thriller, giving FGCU a 4-3 victory.
SCOUTING THE TROJANSAlong with Troy's match with FGCU, the Trojans also faced Winthrop and Georgia Southern. The Trojans split those matches, moving their 2016 record to 6-10. Daniel Bustamante's record at No. 1 singles now stands at 4-6 with his win over Ventura. Giovani Samaha won his match at No. 2 singles over FGCU and is now 1-3 this season from that spot.
In doubles, Troy continues to change its pairings. The Trojans have used eight different combinations at No. 1 doubles, 11 at No. 2 doubles and seven at No. 3.
With last week's loss, the Eagles are now 2-3 all-time against the Trojans.
SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONSSunday's match with No. 23 Penn State will be the third dual against a ranked opponent this season. The Nittany Lions carry impressive records across the board in singles play, starting at the top of the lineup with Leo Stakhovsky's 8-2 mark from No. 1 singles. Constant De La Bassetiere brings a perfect 6-0 record from his No. 2 position into the weekend while also earning a 1-0 record at No. 1 and a 2-0 record at No. 3. Matt Barry has played both No. 3 and No. 4 singles, compiling 3-0 and 4-2 records respectively.
Barry and Stakhovsky have made up one of three pairings used at the No. 2 doubles position. The duo is 4-2 on the year while Matt Galush and Roman Trkulja are 2-0. At No. 1 doubles, David Kohan and Christian Lutschaunig are 6-4.
Sunday will be the first meeting between Penn State and FGCU.
UP NEXTFGCU returns home for a midweek matchup with Texas-San Antonio. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start Tuesday as the Eagles look to keep their unblemished home record.
