TEMPE, Ariz. – Florida Gulf Coast brought home another award this week as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its annual regional awards. The Eagles were honored with the Southeast Region Community Service Award.
The honor highlighted FGCU's continued impact in the community, which was highlighted on March 15 when the Eagles "signed" Caleb Zigelbaur of Team IMPACT.
Zigelbaur, a Florida native who was given just four days to live after being diagnosed with Naegleria fowleri, became an unofficial member of the Florida Gulf Coast men's tennis team after being paired up with the Eagles over a year ago by Team IMPACT.
Every year the ITA recognizes coaches and student-athletes for their excellence both on the court and in their communities throughout the season. The ITA's Southeast Region includes all Division I programs in the states of Georgia and Florida.
The ITA Division I Men's Regional Awards include: ITA/Dunlop Coach of the Year, ITA Assistant Coach of the Year, ITA Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship, Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship, ITA Rookie of the Year, ITA Most Improved Player, ITA Senior Player of the Year, ITA Player to Watch, and ITA Community Service Award.
