FORT MYERS, Fla. – Pablo Paternostro recorded a second consecutive three-set win in singles action, but Florida Gulf Coast (9-15) concluded its season in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament with a 4-1 decision to No. 1 seed North Florida (15-8).
This marks the second straight season the Eagles have advanced to the semifinals of the ASUN Tournament and 12
th semifinal appearance overall.
Singles action was marked by close battles all around the courts. Five of the six singles matches concluded in or were competing in the third set when the match came to a close.
After claiming the doubles point, North Florida extended its lead with a win at No. 1 singles, where two-time ASUN Player of the Year Andreas Scott rallied back for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over
Tanner Povey. The Ospreys pulled within one point of clinching with Breno Marques's 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 result against
Stefan Correa at No. 5 singles.
Pablo Paternostro kept the Green & Blue in contention with a tight 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles over Youssef Labbene. Despite this effort, North Florida clinched the match with a win at No. 6 singles, where Aron Major defeated
Stavros Hadjivarnava, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Earlier in doubles action, the Ospreys secured the doubles point against the Eagles by winning two matches. Major and Scott claimed a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles over Correa and Paternostro, followed by Marques and Joao Portugal's 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles against
Gustav Hasslegren and
CJ Smith. The match at No. 2 doubles featuring
Jonathan Baron and Povey against Riccardo Ciulli and Labbene was left unfinished at 3-3.
