FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fresh off a come-from-behind victory, the FGCU men's tennis team returns home to face Bethune-Cookman and Marquette this weekend with a chance to give head coach
CJ Weber his 50th career win. Friday's action against Bethune-Cookman begins at 5 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex and the weekend concludes Sunday against Marquette at 12 p.m.
LAST TIME OUTDespite dropping the doubles point, FGCU earned its second win of the season defeating FAU 4-3 Friday. The win improved FGCU's 2016 record to 2-2 and also marked Weber's 49th career win. The fifth-year coach now has three chances to reach the 50-win milestone at home, beginning with this weekend's competition.
The Eagles used wins from
Andres Alfonzo (Hollywood, Fla./Texas Christian University),
Ricky Ventura (Barcelona, Spain/University of Barcelona),
Eduardo Alfonzo (Hollywood, Fla./Barry University) and
Ezequiel Cerrini (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla./Homeschool) to complete the comeback against the Owls. All four of FGCU's singles wins came from the top five positions in the line-up, capped by
Eduardo Alfonzo's win at No. 4 singles.
For his match-clinching win, the senior Alfonzo was named the Atlantic Sun's Player of the Week for the second time in his career. Eduardo was also a member of FGCU's doubles win at No. 3 alongside
Javier Fernandez (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB).
SCOUTING THE WILDCATSBethune-Cookman has rallied in consecutive matches to enter the weekend 2-1. Most recently, the Wildcats defeated Embry-Riddle 5-4 after falling behind 4-1. B-CU also came back from 3-2 down against Campbell to earn its first victory of the season.
Greg Almeida secured the most recent win for the Wildcats at No. 5 singles with a three-set win. Not only did it clinch the victory for Bethune-Cookman, it was also the junior's first dual win of the 2016 season. At the top of the line-up, Alexander Chepik is 1-2 from the No. 1 position while Walid Gtari is 2-1 from the No. 2 position.
In doubles play, Chepik and Gtari have dropped all three matches from the No. 1 doubles position. Against Embry-Riddle, Alvaro Barrera and Justin Hall combined for the lone doubles win.
FGCU has never lost to Bethune-Cookman, winning all five of the previous meetings. Last year, the Eagles defeated the Wildcats 6-1.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLESMarquette began 2016 with wins over IUPUI and South Dakota State, but have since dropped decisions to Indiana and Virginia Commonwealth. The Golden Eagles will also meet Bethune-Cookman prior to Sunday's match with the Eagles. At 2-2, Marquette looks to Daniel Fernandez to set the tone from the No. 1 singles position. The senior is 2-1 on the season while Alvaro Verdu is 2-0 from the No. 2 spot.
Fernandez and Verdu also combine to form the No. 1 doubles pairing, compiling a 2-2 record through the early stages of the 2016 season. At the No. 2 position, Nick Dykema and Kristiyan Trukov have earned the only win for Marquette.
Sunday's dual match marks the first meeting between FGCU and Marquette since the 2000-01 season. In the first year of FGCU's program, the Eagles lost two dual matches to Marquette, 5-1 and 5-2.
