TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FGCU men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 dual match to No. 31 Florida State Monday to end the opening weekend of the dual season. The Eagles fell to 1-2 on the season while the Seminoles improved to 3-0.
"I've got a great group of guys on my hands this year, but we still have a lot to learn in order to get to the next level," said head coach
CJ Weber. "I was happy for Lucas and Ricky, even though they didn't get to finish their match. They got better as the match went on. Andres and Oliver have some great potential together as well. I'm very happy for Andres. This was a good win for himself and for the team. We'll continue to work and learn."
FGCU fell behind early after Florida State claimed the doubles point.
Eduardo Alfonzo (Hollywood, Fla./Barry University) and
Chris Perrigan (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay HS) fell 6-0 at No. 3 doubles while
Andres Alfonzo (Hollywood, Fla./Texas Christian University) and
Oliver Landert (Naples, Fla./Florida Virtual School/Florida) dropped a 6-4 match at No. 1 doubles to secure the point for the hosts.
Ricky Ventura (Barcelona, Spain/University of Barcelona) and
Lucas Vaz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Fleming/Tulsa) were tied at 5-5 in their match at No. 2 doubles with No. 55 Terrance Whitehurst and Terrell Whitehurst, but the match was not completed.
In singles play,
Sam Chaffin (Tampa, Fla./Wharton HS) fell 6-0, 6-0, putting the Eagles behind 2-0. 6-4,
Manfred Fellin (Monza, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) dropped his first set 6-0 to Aziz Dougaz and mounted a comeback in the second set but fell 6-4. Trailing 3-0 in the match, Ventura had the better of No. 15 Benjamin Lock throughout the early stages of the first set, but Lock was able to get by Ventura in the first, 6-4. The senior then fell 6-1 in the second set.
Eduardo Alfonzo found himself in a tight match at No. 3 singles, dropping a 6-4, 6-2 match to No. 77 Marco Nunez.
FGCU earned its win at No. 2 singles with a 7-5, 0-6, 1-0 (11-9) decision while Landert lost a tough 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) match at No. 5 singles.
NEXT UPThe Eagles will have 11 days off before returning to the courts. FGCU remains in the Sunshine State, traveling to Boca Raton to meet with FAU Jan. 29.
