Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf placed fifth at the Sea Best Invitational Tuesday in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, behind a season-best performance from Matt Millar and a career-best effort from Brody Stevenson.
"The guys did a good job hanging in there after a slow start," head coach Andrew Danna said. "We managed to get out of there with a top-five finish. We will look to get back on track at the Gator in a few weeks."
Millar and Brody produced season-best finishes on the playerboard, tying for 15th at TPC Sawgrass. Stevenson produced back-to-back rounds of 71 for his career-best effort, while Millar opened the tournament Monday with a pair of 71s. Millar sank a team-leading 11 birdies throughout the tournament en route to his season-best performance.
FGCU entered and closed the final day of play in fifth place, carding a final-round 287. The Eagles managed to post their best tournament round in Monday's second-round action, a 284.
The Green and Blue (+25) placed ahead of three ASUN member institutions Wednesday: seventh-place Lipscomb, eighth-place Kennesaw State and 14th-place finisher Jacksonville.
Florida won the team title at one-over-par, while North Florida's Robbie Higgins captured the individual title at five-under for the Ospreys.
Four Eagles closed the day one of the invitational with a consistent 71: Millar, Steveson, Sullivan and Christian Figueredo. After an opening-round 76, Figueredo matched his teammates with not one but two rounds of 71 to tie for 28th on the player leaderboard.
Joseph Sullivan notched his best round of the event (71) in Monday's second round, while Austin Cherichella improved each round with his tournament-best 72 on Tuesday. Cherichella drained FGCU's lone eagle to highlight his final-round effort.
FGCU returns to the course Feb. 17-18 for the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Florida.
