Sullivan wins Valero Texas Collegiate individual title

SAN ANTONIOJoseph Sullivan won the inaugural Valero Texas Collegiate individual title Monday to highlight Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf at the three-day tournament.

"I'm shook. I'm in shock," Sullivan said. "I'm pretty wet, but obviously very happy to come out with a win. San Antonio, we'll see you in April."

Sullivan prevailed in a three-way playoff against Texas Christian University's Gustav Frimodt and Baylor University's Johnny Keefer. Sullivan sank his tournament-clinching birdie on the second playoff hole.

Sullivan forced the playoff hole opportunities by carding a 2-under-par round of 70. On hole No. 18, he sank a crucial par putt to remain tied. Heading into Monday's final round, he trailed the tournament leaders by two strokes.

With the win, Sullivan (-6, 210) earned an exemption into the 2024 Valero Texas Open, which will be played March 30-April 2.

"Our team did a great job managing the day," head coach Andrew Danna said. "I'm very proud of our team. Congratulations to Joe on the individual victory and earning a PGA Tour start in the process. We all are so proud of him. We'll look to continue to get better as we head up to Cincinnati for our next event."

As a team, the FGCU placed seventh at 4-over. Vanderbilt surged to win the team title at 13-under-par behind a tournament-low team round of 276.

Austin Cherichella produced a top-20 effort for the Eagles, while Matt Millar recorded a top-25 performance. Cherichella tied for 16th at even-par, and Millar tied for 23rd at two-over.

The new-look Eagles sank 53 birdies, second most among the stacked 12-team field.

FGCU returns to the links Sept. 18-19 for the Cincinnati Bearcat Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.
