Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf capped a historic all-around tournament performance Thursday in Kapolei, Hawaii, placing second at the Kapolei Invitational.
FGCU set not one but five records in paradise. On Tuesday, FGCU turned in a program record 20-under to-par score to open the tournament. FGCU continued to its historic charge by also breaking the 36-hole to-par score at 30-under.Â
The Green and Blue finished 51-under as a team, another program record. FGCU's aggregate three-round score of 813 shattered the previous record of 832.Â
"Really proud of our team," head coach Andrew Danna said. "They did a great job this week. This team set the school record for 18, 36, and 54 holes this week. I'm so proud of them. We'll look to continue to get better this winter and carry the momentum into the spring."
FGCU's 267 in the final round tied the school record for the lowest team round, but its 21-under-par score Thursday broke its Tuesday record of 20-under.
Sebastian Gamboa produced a career-best finish on the player leaderboard, tying for third at 15-under-par. Gamboa shot in the 60's all three rounds with a low of 66 in round one. His 201 marked the third lowest individual 54-hole total in school history.
Loyola Marymount's Trevor Algya won the individual title at 17-under. LMU also captured the team title at 58-under, besting the Eagles by seven strokes.
A pair of Eagles placed top 10 as Austin Cherichella and Joseph Sullivan's 12-under effort tied for eighth place. Cherichella also produced three straight rounds in the 60s, while Sullivan's third-round 65 marked a team low. Sullivan sank a tournament-leading 21 birdies.Â
Matt Millar (-11) trailed teammates Cherichella and Sullivan by just one stroke to tie for 16th, and Christian Figueredo (-8) tied for 25th.Â
FGCU returns to action in the spring, Jan. 29-30 for the Sea Best Invitational in Jacksonville, Florida.
