Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf produced another strong performance at the Kapolei Invitational Wednesday in Kapolei, Hawaii, currently tying for third place on the team leaderboard.
FGCU is tied alongside Baylor University at 30-under-par heading into Thursday's final round. At 30-under par, FGCU has set a new 36-hole to-par score program record, the second record broken by the Eagles this tournament. The Eagles are positioned just six strokes back of tournament leader Loyola Marymount University.
"I'm really proud of our team," head coach Andrew Danna said. "We are excited for another opportunity to compete tomorrow."
The Eagles entered Wednesday's action fresh off a program-best to-par score of 20-under-par, which propelled FGCU into first place in round one.
FGCU's opening-round 268 narrowly missed tying the program record for the lowest team round. Jim Suttie's 2008-09 crew still holds that honor with a 267 at the Don Benbow Invitational. The Green & Blue followed with a 278 on Wednesday.
Sebastian Gamboa continues to lead the FGCU starting five on the islands. Gamboa is just two strokes off the tournament leader after turning in a four-under 68 to currently tie for seventh at 10-under. Gamboa opened the tournament with a career-low 66.
Matt Millar and Austin Cherichella are tied for 19th at seven-under-par. Cherichella posted a three-under 69, while Millar carded a two-under 70.
The entire FGCU starting five has remained in the red numbers through the first 36 holes.Â
At five-under-par, Joseph Sullivan and Christian Figueredo are tied for 31st place. Both Sullivan and Figueredoconnected on an eagle opportunity Wednesday, giving FGCU a team-leading four eagles for the event.
The third and final round of the Kapolei Invitational is scheduled for Thursday.
