JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf climbed into eighth place Monday after round two of the ESTU Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
"I'm really proud of our team," head coach Andrew Danna said. "We got off to a good start today. We struggled a little bit at the turn, but the team played well enough to move up the leaderboard. We are looking forward to another opportunity to compete tomorrow."
Tournament host East Tennessee State overtook Furman to lead the 15-team field at 13-under-par. East Tennessee State's Mats Ege continues to pace the player leaderboard, holding a comfortable six-stroke lead at 12-under.
FGCU (+4) turned in a team score of 289 Monday after opening the event with a 291. The Eagles are tied for second in made birdies, sinking 37, but are 13th in made pars.
Joseph Sullivan highlighted the Eagles' round-two performance by shooting a team-low, four-under 68. At five-under, Sullivan surged up the player leaderboard into a tie for third place.
Austin Cherichella finished the day tied for 20th at even-par as he produced a one-over 73. Cherichella is one of only 10 golfers with a combined under-par score on the par-three holes. His 11 birdies also led all Eagles in the category. Sebastian Gamboa improved by four strokes Monday with a second-round 72, currently placing him tied for 53rd.
The third and final round is scheduled for Tuesday.
