Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf powered its way into first place at the Kapolei Invitational Tuesday, shooting a program record 20-under-par in round one.
FGCU (268) made an early statement among the 19-team field and holds a one-stroke lead over Baylor heading into Wednesday's second round. Each member of the FGCU starting five opened the tournament in the red numbers, producing a 68 or lower.
"Our team did a great job managing the day," head coach Andrew Danna said. "We got off to a good start and we were able to keep our momentum throughout the day. It's a long tournament. We'll look to make the most of the opportunity tomorrow in the second round."
Sebastian Gamboa carded a bogey free round and sank six birdies en route to a team and career-low round of 66. At six-under, Gamboa is tied for third on the player leaderboard and sits just one stroke off the leaders.
Joseph Sullivan and Matt Millar are tied for 11th at five-under-par, shooting a pair of 67s. Both Sullivan and Millar connected on four consecutive birdies on the back nine. Millar is tied for the tournament lead in birdies with eight.
Austin Cherichella and Christian Figueredo fired four-under, 68s to tie for 17th place. Cherichella drilled not one but two eagles to highlight his impressive round.
Round two of the three-day event is slated for Wednesday. The third and final round of the tournament is scheduled for Thursday.
