Cherichella, FGCU perched in first place after day one of Badger Invitational

MADISON, Wis.Austin Cherichella and Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf are perched in first place Sunday after round one of the Badger Invitational. 

"I'm really proud of our team today," head coach Andrew Danna said. "They did a great job managing the course, while staying focused throughout the day. We are looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow."

Cherichella fired a season-low, seven-under 65 to open the tournament and pace the field. Cherichella caught fire near the turn, sinking five straight birdies. He holds a one-stroke lead heading into Monday's second round.

As a team, the Eagles boasted a 14-under-par effort and leads the 18-team field by seven strokes. Middle Tennessee is second at seven-under.

FGCU's 274 marked a season low, and tied seventh lowest team round in program history. At 14-under, the Eagles tied the fourth lowest round versus par in school history. 

Two fellow Eagles finished the day in the top 10 as Matt Millar and Joseph Sullivan are tied for sixth at three-under.

Sebastian Gamboa also produced an under-par performance Sunday, emerging as the fourth Eagle to be in the red numbers with an 1-under 71.

Round two of the Badger Invitational is set for Monday. The third and final round of play is scheduled for Tuesday.
