PREVIEW: Regular season champs look to claim outright title on Senior Day

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men's tennis team (11-8, 6-0 ASUN) will compete at the FGCU Tennis Complex for the last time this season against Kennesaw State (10-11, 4-2 ASUN) at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. The four seniors – Ezequiel Cerrini, Felipe Escobar, Javier Fernandez and Mateo Ruiz – will be honored in between doubles and singles play. The FGCU women's tennis team will be playing a match against Kennesaw State at the same time and its senior class will be honored as well.

"Senior Day is always a very special day at the FGCU Tennis Courts," head coach CJ Weber said. "I've been blessed once again to be able to coach four amazing young men that we will be celebrating tomorrow. On top of that, we get the opportunity to win the regular season championship outright. It'll most certainly be a great match and we're looking forward to putting on one last show to the Southwest Florida tennis community for the 2019 season."

Last Time Out
•     The Eagles defeated Liberty 6-1 at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Thursday night to claim no worse than a share of the 2019 ASUN Regular Season Championship. The title is the third regular-season crown and fifth overall for the Green and Blue since 2015.
•     With the win, FGCU has locked up the No. 1 seed in the 2019 ASUN Championship.
•     The Green and Blue started things off by securing the doubles point for the sixth match in a row. Junior Marcelo Tebet (Londrina, Brazil/Colégio Anglo Americano) and sophomore Juan Montes (Pereira, Colombia) earned a 6-4 win at the second flight. Juniors Feliksas Sakalauskas (Palanga, Lithuania/Virginia Tech) and Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School) followed up with a 6-4 victory at court three to earn the point.
•     Tebet started off singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the second court. Senior Javier Fernandez (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB) won his eighth-straight match 6-1, 6-4 at the sixth flight.
•     Escobar clinched the match for the home team with a straight-set 6-1, 6-4 win on court No. 3. Sakalauskas followed up with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the fifth flight and Ramirez rounded out the scoring with a 10-8 tiebreaker win on court No. 2 to put the Eagles up 6-0.

Scouting the Owls
•     This will be the 11th meeting in the series between the two teams, which the Eagles lead 6-4.
•     The Green and Blue own a 3-1 record at the FGCU Tennis Complex and a 3-3 edge at the Owls' Betty Siegel Courts.
•     Kennesaw State has won the last two meetings, including a 4-3 victory in Fort Myers in 2017 and a 5-2 home win last season.
•     The Owls are currently tied for third in the ASUN standings with UNF.
•     Kennesaw State has picked up wins against Lipscomb, North Alabama, Stetson and NJIT. Both UNF and Liberty defeated Kennesaw State by a score of 5-2.
•     Freshman Jose Gavez leads the team with a 4-0 mark in conference singles play. Junior Sebastian Osorio is 4-2 against ASUN opponents but owns a team-best overall record of 11-6.

The Eagles will compete in the 2019 ASUN Men's Tennis Championship Thursday, April 18 – Saturday, April 20 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center in DeLand. FGCU has already clinched the No. 1 seed and will have a bye in the first round.

CJ WEBER
FGCU is led by CJ Weber, who has coached 29 ASUN All-Conference selections since joining the Green and Blue in 2011. In his seventh year, Weber has compiled an 91-76 (.540) overall record and a 36-18 (.655) record in ASUN play. In 2014-15, Weber guided the Eagles to their first-ever ASUN Championship and first-ever ASUN Regular Season title after a program-best 17 wins. In his third season, Weber led Jordi Vives to a No. 35 national ranking, a nation-leading 14-match unbeaten streak and the round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament - the program's first appearance. The Eagles completed a perfect ASUN season in 2016 and finished with a conference titles as well as a Coach of the Year honor for Weber. FGCU again won the 2017 ASUN Championship and made its second NCAA appearance. The Eagles recently returned to the mountaintop by claiming the 2019 regular-season championship.

FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 76 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 11+ seasons at the Division-I level. Additionally, in just seven+ seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 34 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including both men's and women's soccer again in 2018. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best 6th-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.35 GPA in the classroom in the Spring, 2018 and had an ASUN Conference and State of Florida best five teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport.  The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours – being recognized as one of two runner-ups for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
