TULSA, Okla. - The FGCU women's golf team sits just outside the top 10 through the first day of the Dale McNamara Invitational at Tulsa Country Club. The Green and Blue will compete in the team's final round of the regular season on Tuesday.
Led by
Natalia Nassar's 155 (+15), the Eagles shot a 623 (+63) and sit just six strokes shy of South Florida for 10th place.
Nassar's (Floridablanca, Colombia/Colegio Panamericano) output is good for a 39th place tie.
"We obviously are not happy about our play today nor did we expect the result," FGCU head coach Sarah Trew said. "However, tomorrow is a new day and we have an opportunity to turn things around. Conditions were very difficult out there today but our issues were more with the mental aspect of the game.
"We did not do a good job of committing to shots or putts. Instead we tried to steer the ball as opposed to putting our normal swings on it. Tomorrow we just need to come out more gritty and be confident. We are still the same team that won a tournament a couple weeks ago, but we just have to remember what made us successful and not deviate from that."
Kelsy Holbert (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner HS) and
Kate Williamson (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy HS) each shot a 156 (+16) to finish one stroke shy of Nassar and tie for 43rd.
Madeline Marck-Sherk (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway Crystal Beach HS) fired a 159 (+19) and is tied for 56th, while
Ailsa Clark (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) is 59th after a 160 (+20) in which she shot an 80 each round.
This is the first time the Eagles have participated in this event, and it's the first time the Green and Blue have competed in the state of Oklahoma in program history.
Furthermore, it is the toughest and deepest slate of competition they have faced all spring as a total of six GolfStat top-100 teams are in the event - matching the total number they've faced this spring. In fact, FGCU had not faced more than two top-100 teams in any tournament this spring.

Following Tuesday's final round of the McNamara Invitational, the Eagles will travel to Braselton, Ga. for the ASUN Championship April 22-24.
DALE MCNAMARA
McNamara coached 26 years at The University of Tulsa and took the golf program from the ground floor to national prominence, winning four national championships. Her first national crown came at the 1980 AIAW National Championship. McNamara's 1982 team won the final AIAW Championship, while winning the first-ever NCAA Championship that same season. Led by individual champion and her daughter Melissa, Tulsa's 1988 team captured the school's fourth national golf title and second NCAA crown. McNamara retired from coaching following the 1999-2000 season after winning 81 tournament titles and coaching 28 first or second team All-Americans.
COACH TREW
Head coach Sarah Trew is in her 7th season at the helm of the FGCU women's golf team. She took over in 2011 and has since guided the Eagles to the program's best-ever finish in the ASUN Tournament and 29 top-5 finishes. The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically. The spring of 2015 saw the Eagles again take third place at the ASUN Championship, and recording their best team score of the season while 2016 again set a new standard. In 2015-16, Trew earned her first ASUN Coach of the Year title after the squad recorded a new program best with a 305.29 average and took second-place at the conference tournament – the program's best finish in the event. In the second round of that tournament, the Eagles carded a team score of 290 to set a low-round program record. The 2016-17 Eagles repeated that success with another second-place finish in the ASUN Championship and for the third time since Trew took over, set a new record with a 302.30 stroke average on the season.
