FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast women's golf head coach Shannon Sykora announced the addition of assistant coach Sara Kennedy (née Detlefsen) on Monday.

"Delighted to have Sara return to FGCU and join the coaching staff," Sykora said. "She brings a rare combination of perspective to this role, having competed at this level for FGCU, played professionally, and already built a program of her own as a head coach. That experience is going to be invaluable for our student-athletes. We are excited to welcome her back to the nest."

"Ten years after my own graduation, I'm thrilled to be returning to my alma mater to work with the team that I was proud to represent as a student-athlete," Kennedy said. "The program has achieved so much in the last decade and has worlds of potential for the future. I feel so blessed to be a part of the team's next successes, and privileged to work with as accomplished of a head coach as Coach Sykora. As they say, 'Once an Eagle, always an Eagle'."

Kennedy returns to Florida Gulf Coast as a familiar face, having competed for the Eagles from 2012-16. During her four years in green and blue, she built a reputation as one of the program's most consistent competitors, earning back-to-back ASUN Academic All-Conference honors as a junior and senior. As a senior in 2015-16, she posted a stroke average of 78.3 across 23 rounds and eight tournaments, highlighted by a season-best 222 at the Johnie Imes Invitational and a season-low round of 73 at the Florida Challenge. A year earlier, as a junior, she played all 28 rounds for FGCU, carried a 78.4 stroke average through 10 events and turned in a top-25 finish at the Pat Bradley Invitational, before closing the year with a ninth-place showing at the ASUN Championship, where she led all FGCU players with the low round of the tournament in the opening round.

Kennedy's collegiate résumé also includes standout performances as an underclassman, from an eighth-place finish out of 47 golfers at the FGCU Eagle Invitational as a sophomore to a top-20-percent national ranking in par-3 scoring and nearly 80 percent fairways hit as a freshman. She graduated from FGCU with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science in 2014 before adding a Master's of Public Administration in 2016.

Following her collegiate career, Kennedy turned professional and competed on the Symetra Tour (now the Epson Tour) from August 2015 through August 2021, gaining first-hand experience competitng at one of the highest levels of golf. Alongside her playing career, she also worked as a teaching professional from May 2016 through March 2022, building a foundation in instruction that would carry into her coaching career.

From April 2022 through April 2024, Kennedy served as Senior Coordinator for the LPGA Foundations Programs, further deepening her involvement in golf development before stepping into collegiate coaching. She was named head women's golf coach at Long Island University in October 2024, a position she held for two seasons before returning to Fort Myers.

The Eagles open the 2026-27 season at the Pan-Pacific UGSL Tournament in Shizuoka, Japan, running Sept. 2-4, before returning stateside to continue their pursuit of another ASUN Championship.
