BRASELTON, Ga. -
Madeline Marck-Sherk fired a final round 70 for a second place finish and helped the FGCU women's golf team vault up into a tie for fourth place to conclude the ASUN Championship on Tuesday at Chateau Elan's Legends Course.
The Eagles shot a 291 in the final round, which was the second best among all teams behind Kennesaw State's 288. In fact, the team made the biggest turnaround among all teams from the opening round as the Green and Blue shaved 38 strokes off Sunday's 329.
The tournament, initially scheduled for 54 holes, was shortened to 36 holes following heavy rain overnight Sunday and into Monday.
"I am thrilled with our performance today," FGCU head coach
Sarah Trew said. "Unfortunately, we had some pretty major weather issues that didn't allow us to get the final round in as I think we could have moved up the leaderboard even more.
"We dug ourselves into quite a bit of a hole after the first round and had to do something spectacular to move up the leaderboard today, and that is just what we did. When we talked as a team on Sunday, we stressed having nothing worse than bogey and we accomplished that goal today. It was great to end the year on a high note by posting the second best round of the tournament."
FGCU tallied a 36-hole total of 620, which tied Jacksonville and was just three shots behind Stetson's third-place 617. Kennesaw State won the event with a 601, while North Florida finished second at 610.
Marck-Sherk (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway Crystal Beach HS), who shot a 77 in the opening round, finished with a two-round 147, which tied Kennesaw State's Charlotte Charrayre for second place. Her performance earned her a spot on the all-tournament team. Madison Caldwell of Kennesaw State shot a 145 to win the individual championship.
"I am so proud of Madeline,"
Trew said. "She came into this tournament not playing her best golf, but still had the mindset of winning the tournament. She has worked so hard all year on her game, in the gym and on her mental game. I could not be happier to see it all come to fruition this week for her."
Marck-Sherk's teammate,
Ailsa Clark, took 12 strokes off her first round total and shot a 72 on Tuesday, which tied her with three others for 10th place at 156. It was the second lowest score of the year for the sophomore, who shot a season-best 69 in the Pat Bradley Invitational on Oct. 22.
Kate Williamson (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy HS) finished third among FGCU golfers with a 158. She tied for 16th overall and tied
Clark (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) with a 72 in the second round, which was for second best on the team behind Marck-Sherk.
Natalia Nassar (Floridablanca, Colombia/Colegio Panamericano) shot a 77 in the second round and finished in a tie for 24th place with
Kelsy Holbert (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner HS), who fired a 79 on Tuesday to finish with a 162.

COACH TREW
Head coach Sarah Trew is in her 7th season at the helm of the FGCU women's golf team. She took over in 2011 and has since guided the Eagles to the program's best-ever finish in the ASUN Tournament and 29 top-5 finishes. The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically. The spring of 2015 saw the Eagles again take third place at the ASUN Championship, and recording their best team score of the season while 2016 again set a new standard. In 2015-16, Trew earned her first ASUN Coach of the Year title after the squad recorded a new program best with a 305.29 average and took second-place at the conference tournament – the program's best finish in the event. In the second round of that tournament, the Eagles carded a team score of 290 to set a low-round program record. The 2016-17 Eagles repeated that success with another second-place finish in the ASUN Championship and for the third time since Trew took over, set a new record with a 302.30 stroke average on the season.
