Brittany Brown Named #ASunWSoc Defensive Player of the Week

MACON, Ga. – For the first time this season and fifth time in her career, FGCU goalkeeper Brittany Brown has been named the Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week after securing a shutout opposite Jacksonville on Saturday night in a match that locked the Eagles' fifth-straight A-Sun Regular Season Championship. The Eagles will host both semi-final matchups on Nov. 7 and the championship match on Nov. 9.

Brown made four saves in the 2-0 win over the Dolphins to preserve her eighth shutout of the season and 26th of her career. The junior now leads the A-Sun in save percentage (.849) and goals-against average (0.69) after being named the A-Sun Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year. Since taking over the starting role during her freshman campaign, Brown has collected 38 wins, which rank second all-time (42), against just nine losses and seven ties. She is currently the FGCU career leader in three goalkeeping categories including goals-against average (0.70), saves per game (3.70) and save percentage (.841).

"Brittany has been great for us," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "It's good to know as a coach that you have someone back there that you can trust. She has come up big for us time and again and you saw that when she stopped a PK last week. She wants to win any way that she can and she does a great job directing the traffic in front of her. She saves games for us and that's all you can ask for, this award is well-deserved."

Tabby Tindell provided the eventual game-winning score in the 14th minute against JU for her single-season record breaking 16th goal and it was Paulina Speckmaier who provided the insurance in the 59th minute on a long strike from outside the box. With the victory FGCU is now 3-2-5 all-time opposite JU.

JIM BLANKENSHIP
A veteran of over two decades in collegiate coaching, head coach Jim Blankenship, who was named the 2012 and 2013 A-Sun Coach of the Year, has built FGCU women's soccer into a yearly contender in the Atlantic Sun Conference and a rising program in the South Region in just eight seasons. Blankenship started the program in 2007 and has since guided the Eagles to eight double-digit win seasons, culminating with Atlantic Sun Regular Season Championships in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. In 2011 and 2012 he also led the Eagles to back-to-back A-Sun tournament championships and became the first team in the history of the university to make it to the NCAA Tournament. Blankenship has guided FGCU to a 97-35-17 overall record over the first eight seasons of the program's existence, including a 53-9-9 mark in the A-Sun.
