Matrevica called up to Latvian National Team

FGCU women's soccer goalkeeper added to roster for FIFA qualifying matches

FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU women's soccer goalkeeper Madara Matrevica was selected to the Latvian senior national team for FIFA Women's World Cup qualifying matches, the Latvian Football Federation announced Wednesday.

"Madara's senior national team call-up is a tremendous honor and a direct reflection of her hard work and commitment to excellence," FGCU women's soccer head coach Jim Blankenship said. "We're proud to see her represent her country and look forward to her bringing that international experience and momentum back into our program this fall."

Matrevica and the Latvian national team will play a pair of qualifying matches. On March 3, Latvia will face Slovakia, and Latvia will take on Finland on March 7.

In her first campaign in Fort Myers, Matrevica was tabbed to the All-ASUN Freshman team after a quality year in the net. The goalkeeper started all 18 games for FGCU and was named the September 15 & October 6 ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week.

Matrevica logged 1,386 minutes in goal, posted four solo clean sheets and contributed to five more. She allowed just 15 goals (five in ASUN play) for a 0.97 GAA in the regular season.
Nine of her 15 goals were conceded against SEC teams (LSU, Florida, Auburn).

Matrevica played the full 90 minutes in six ASUN contests and 11 games overall. She finished the regular season with 57 saves and a .792 save percentage overall. Her save percentage jumped to .861 in ASUN play (31 saves).
