Men's Golf claims first ASUN Championship, Gamboa takes individual title

VALDOSTA, Ga. - History was made Thursday at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club. The Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf team closed with a final round 3-under to finish at 15-under for the tournament, capturing the first ASUN Championship in program history in dominant fashion, 11 strokes clear of second place Stetson. At the center of it all was Sebastian Gamboa, who claimed the individual title to complete a sweep of the team and individual crowns, becoming the first Eagle to win the ASUN individual championship since Van Holmgren in 2021.

Gamboa finished at 12-under for the tournament to claim medalist honors, while Sacha Ruiz surged two spots up the leaderboard in the final round to finish as the individual runner-up at 9-under. Nolan Harper climbed nine spots to finish in a tie for 17th at 2-over, and Brett Moore and Christian Figueredo each finished in a tie for 38th at 7-over.

How It Happened
Gamboa's final round was a testament to his resilience, as he navigated a bumpy start to still sign for a 2-under 70 and secure the individual title. He opened the front nine with bogeys on holes one and three before settling in and responding with birdies on holes six, eight and nine to reach 1-under through the outward half with a 35. The back nine featured the highlight of his round, as he eagled the par-5 11th, his second eagle of the tournament, to surge to 3-under on the day. He added birdies on holes 13 and 14 to reach 5-under before bogeys on holes 12, 15 and 18 trimmed the final margin to 2-under, closing with a back-nine 35 and a championship-clinching 70. Over the course of the tournament, Gamboa posted 15 birdies, tied for the third most in the field, and led all players with two eagles.

Ruiz capped an All-Tournament Team performance with a sharp and composed final-round 70 that lifted him into sole possession of second place on the individual leaderboard. He was efficient early, making a birdie on the opening hole before a double bogey on the par-5 second temporarily set him back. He recovered quickly, however, with birdies on holes five and eight to reach 1-under at the turn with a front-nine 35. On the back nine, he continued to apply pressure, picking up birdies on holes 11 and 14 while absorbing only a single bogey on hole 13, closing with a back-nine 35 to sign for 70. Ruiz's 16 birdies across the three rounds were the second most in the entire field.

Harper delivered his best round of the championship in the final round, posting a 1-under 71 that propelled him nine spots up the leaderboard. He was steady through the front nine, navigating bogeys on holes eight with birdies on holes five and nine to make the turn at 1-under with a 35. On the back nine, he continued to grind, picking up birdies on holes 12 and 15 while giving back shots with bogeys on holes 14 and 17, finishing with a back-nine 36 and a clean, hard-fought 71. Harper's 33 pars across the tournament were tied for the 14th most in the field and his 10 birdies tied for the 21st most.

Figueredo turned in his most birdie-filled round of the week in the final round, carding three on the front nine, on holes four, five and seven, to reach 2-under through the outward half with a 34. The back nine proved difficult, as bogeys on holes 11, 15, 16 and 17 led to a back-nine 40 and a 2-over 74. Figueredo's 35 pars for the tournament were tied for the fifth most in the field.

Moore bounced back from a difficult second round with a respectable final-round showing, playing his front nine cleanly at even par with a lone birdie on hole seven offset by a bogey on hole six to post a 36. The back nine proved more difficult, as a double bogey on the par-4 12th and bogeys on holes 13, 14 and 17 cost him dearly, though birdies on holes 10 and 16 provided some relief. He finished with a back-nine 39 for a 3-over 75. Moore's 34 pars for the tournament were tied for the eighth most in the field.

As a team across 54 holes, FGCU finished with 55 birdies, tied for the third most in the field, and led all teams with 164 pars while recording the fewest bogeys in the championship field.
