SHIZUOKA, Japan - Florida Gulf Coast's men's golf team sits fifth through the opening round of the Pan Pacific University Golf Super League Tournament at Grand Fields Country Club. The Eagles posted a 1-under total of 283.
FGCU trails leader Nihon by 15 shots and sits seven back of a tie for third between Tohoku Fukushi and New Mexico at the par-71, 7,219-yard layout. Round two continues Thursday, Sept. 3 locally (Wednesday, Sept. 2 stateside).
Jay Wilson and
Christian Figueredo share the team lead with matching rounds of 70 (-1), tying for 19th individually in the combined men's and women's standings. Wilson made four birdies on the front nine for a 3-under 33, then the back nine bit back with four bogeys against two birdies for a 2-over 37. Figueredo was the steadiest Eagle in the field, opening with three birdies against a single bogey for a 2-under 34 on the front nine. He kept the round rolling on the back, giving back just one shot on the way to a 1-over 36 to close out a bogey-light day.
Brody Stevenson is tied for 28th after an even-par 71. He birdied twice on the front nine against a single bogey for a 1-under 35, then gave a shot back with two bogeys against one birdie coming home for a 1-over 36.
Alfie Storer sits tied for 41st in his first round as an Eagle, posting a 72 (+1). He made three birdies and three bogeys on the front nine to turn even, then added two more birdies but three bogeys on the back for a 1-over 36.
Trevor Tingle rounded out the FGCU lineup at 79 (+8) and is tied for 105th. He made the turn at 2-over 38 before a double bogey and four more bogeys on the back nine led to a 6-over 41.
