NASHVILLE – FGCU's
Ashley Matz secured her 10
th singles win of the season – becoming the fifth Eagle to do so – but hers was the lone point in a 4-1 decision at Lipscomb Saturday afternoon.
Matz's 6-1, 6-1 win over Dominguez Collado at No. 3 singles moved her to 10-7 in singles this season, joining
Sabrina Jaramillo (15),
Nora Svensson (15),
Anjali Kotecha (12) and
June Bjork (10) with double-digit wins. It marked her fourth win in as many decisions in singles play.
But it was the only bright spot for the Eagles on a rainy day in Nashville. Moved to the Ensworth (Indoor) Tennis Center due to dark skies and rain, FGCU (10-4, 0-1) stumbled in its conference debut.
After claiming the doubles point, Lipscomb extended its lead as Serafi Bobrovnikova triumphed over Jaramillo, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. That is when Matz responded at No. 3 singles by securing a straight-set victory over Deborah Dominguez Collado, 6-1, 6-1. However, Lipscomb regained momentum with a win at No. 2 singles, as Mariia Dolzhenko defeated Bjork, 6-0, 6-2. The final point for Lipscomb came at No. 6 singles, where Sofiia Zhylchuk overcame
Africa Burillo Berezak, 6-1, 6-1.
Earlier, Lipscomb secured the doubles point with victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 2 doubles. Martina Bovio and Kameliia Tytarenko defeated
Sabrina Jaramillo and Matz, 6-1, followed by Sofiia Paladi and Dominguez Collado's 6-1 win over
Cecilie Maeland and
Anjali Kotecha.
The Eagles continue their road trip in ASUN play by heading to North Alabama Sunday.
