TAMPA – FGCU's
Siyabonga Mokgothu claimed his second spring race win overall and posted the second-fastest 5,000-meter time in school history as he led the Eagles at the Tampa Distance Classic on Friday night.
The junior distance runner clocked 14:34.89 in the 5K race, winning by nearly a half-second in a crowded field of over 50 runners. Not far behind Mokgothu was
Evan Casterline, who finished fifth as he ran 14:55.69, the 13
th-fastest time in school history.
In the men's 1,500m,
Innocent Ntwali finished fourth. His mark of 3:59.21 now ranks fourth in school history, overtaking the 2017 time of Carlin Berryhill of 3:59.23.
On the women's side,
Alise Petrova finished third in the 5K with a time of 17:21.78. That shows a nearly five-second improvement in her 5K time from three weeks ago on the same track.
Addison Torres ran 18:11.83 to finish eighth, while
Tess Shultz claimed a top-10 time of 18:24.10 to finish 10
th.
FGCU returns to action on Mar. 20 in Orlando when the Eagles will compete at the Black & Gold Invite hosted by UCF.
