Courtney Vernon nets 150th career win as Eagles defeat Barry, 4-1

FGCU hands reigning Division II national champion first loss of season

FORT MYERS, Fla.– Despite dropping the doubles point, FGCU registered a 4-1 win over Barry to hand the reigning DII national champion its first loss of the season. With the victory, Eagles head coach Courtney Vernon recorded her 150th win as a head coach.

Now in her 13th season, Vernon has led the Eagles (9-2) to double-digit wins in 10 of her 12 previous seasons and her only non-winning season was the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

For Barry (7-1), the Division II reigning national champions, claiming the doubles point was not enough momentum to stop the red-hot Eagles. The victory over Barry marked the fourth such win over the Bucs for FGCU and handed Barry its first loss since they faced FGCU last season.

Barry secured the doubles point with victories at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles. Ailen Crespo and Louane Lutringer triumphed 7-5 over Nora Svensson and Anjali Kotecha at No. 1 doubles, while Jenifer Anger and Dana Heimen clinched the point with a 7-5 win against June Bjork and Africa Burillo Berezak at No. 2 doubles. The Eagles' Sabrina Jaramillo and Ashley Matz prevented the sweep with a decisive 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Lucie Brun and Anastasia Nikolova.

In singles, Jaramillo reversed momentum for the Eagles with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles over Niklova. That marked Jaramillo's 13th singles win of the season. Then 120th-ranked June Bjork gave FGCU the lead with her 6-4, 6-1 win over Crespo at No. 2 doubles.

Burillo Berezak added another point for the Eagles with a straightforward 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Brun to move the Eagle freshman to 5-5 on the year in singles.

Svensson, playing at No. 1 singles, posted her team-leading 14th singles win of the season as she posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Brun to clinch the match.

Up next for Florida Gulf Coast is a home match against No. 75 Furman on Monday, March 2 at 10 a.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
