Ashley Matz, Sabrina Jaramillo claim wins for Eagles

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Ashley Matz and Sabrina Jaramillo each recorded wins for FGCU (9-3) Monday morning but the Eagles were unable to complete the upset in a 4-2 decision against No. 75 Furman (5-3) at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

Trailing 2-0, Matz secured the 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles for FGCU's first point of the match. Then, down 3-1, Jaramillo's 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles kept the Eagles' chances alive as she matched Nora Svensson for a team-leading 14th singles win of the season.

The 75th-ranked Paladins secured the first point of the match with victories at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. Macy Hitchcock and Molly Robinson topped Jaramillo and Matz, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles, while Lillie Murphy and Elle Warren, ranked 31st in the nation, clinched the point with a 6-3 win over Svensson and Anjali Kotecha at No. 1 doubles.

Furman took a 2-0 lead as Bianca Ceroni overcame Anjali Kotecha at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4. After the Eagles responded with Matz's win, Furman's Murphy upended 120th-ranked June Bjork at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3.

Jaramillo's win kept FGCU alive before Furman's Lily Doherty edged Africa Burillo Berezak in two tight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) to clinch the match. That brought a halt to the heated battle at No. 1 singles, where Svensson and Warren were even in the third set, 6-2, 6-7 (7-9), 1-1.

FGCU returns to the courts on Tuesday morning as the Green & Blue hosts Toledo (5-4) at 10 a.m.
