FORT MYERS, Fla. — Florida Gulf Coast University's women's tennis team swept all three doubles matches and earned a 4–3 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
"The ladies are fighting very hard and putting in a great effort," FGCU head coach
Courtney Vernon said. "They know they have a lot to work on and improve, but the fight is there. We are looking forward to preparing for the University of Miami on Wednesday."
FGCU (2–0) set the tone early in doubles play.
June Bjork and
Africa Burillo earned a 6–4 win in singles No. 1 before
Anjali Kotecha and
Nora Svensson clinched the doubles point with a 7–5 victory in the No. 2 doubles.
Ashley Matz and
Sabarina Jaramillo completed the sweep with a 7–6 (0) win for doubles No. 3.
In singles action, Kotecha extended the Eagles' lead with a 6–0, 6–3 win for singles No. 5. Bjork followed with a 6–3, 6–2 victory for the No. 3 singles to give FGCU a 3–0 advantage.
Miami (Ohio) (0–1) got on the scoreboard when Burillo battled through three sets but fell 6–1, 1–6, 6–3 for the No. 6 singles. The RedHawks continued to close the gap as Svensson dropped a 6–4, 7–6 (2) decision at singles No. 1.
The match came down to singles No. 4, where Jaramillo rebounded after dropping the first set 6–4 to earn a 6–2, 6–1 victory and clinch the match for the Green & Blue.
FGCU will return to action Wednesday with an 11 a.m. match at Miami. The contest was originally scheduled for last Wednesday but was postponed due to inclement weather in Miami.
