Kotecha highlights seven ASUN awards for women's tennis

 Anjali Kotecha was named Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year and highlighted Florida Gulf Coast University women's tennis earning seven ASUN awards.

Kotecha joined Isabella Colmenares and Ashley Matz on the Second Team All-ASUN and Nora Svensson, Matz and Kotecha all made the All-Freshman Team.

 "We are very proud of our freshman and this entire team," said head women's tennis coach Courtney Vernon. "Angie just came in January to the university and has adapted so quickly. Her positive grateful, attitude is a huge asset to the program and we are happy that she got FOTY."
  
This season, Kotecha made an impressive college debut as she currently leads the Eagles with a 14-5 record, mainly at No. 2. Kotecha has won ASUN Player of the Week twice this season.

She first won it on March 5 when she delivered a 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) victory at No. 3 against No. 32 Yale's Mirabelle Brettkelly. One day later, she teamed up with Francisca Vergara at No. 3 in doubles to win 6-3 against No. 42 South Alabama. Kotecha then won her singles match at No. 2 delivering an easy 6-2, 6-3 score.

She then played on court No. 1 for the first time in her career and clinched the match for the Eagles with a 7-6 (6-4), 6-2 victory as FGCU defeated St. John' s. The other time she won the award was April 2 after rallying through three sets and delivered a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory to help the Eagles clinch the match and hand North Alabama its first conference loss of the season.

Kotecha has non-conference victories over MTSU, Minnesota, Mercer, USF and South Alabama. She holds a 7-2 conference record.

Kotecha and Francisca Vergara lead the Eagles in doubles with an 8-4 record.

This is Colmenares second time on the second team. The senior recorded her 50th career win this season and has an 11-9 record from playing mainly on court No. 2 and 1. She won ASUN Player of the Week on March 26 after helping the Eagles win back-to-back  ASUN 7-0 victories.

Colmenares teamed up with Matz to clinch the doubles point for the Eagles with a 6-1 victory on court No. 1. In singles she registered a 6-3, 6-2 win on court No. 2 as FGCU swept Queens.

Two days later versus Eastern Kentucky the FGCU's number 1 doubles pair delivered a 6-4 victory before Colmenares clinched the match for the Green & Blue with a 6-2, 6-4 score on court No. 2.

She has delivered non-conference victories over MTSU, Minnesota, USF and St. John's. Colmenares held a five game ASUN win streak earning victories on court No. 2 versus Queens, EKU, Lipscomb, North Alabama and UNF.

Matz has been put to the test and prevailed as a freshman as she played soley at No. 1 and has a 7-8 record. She earned the ASUN's first Player of the Week award. Her college debut performance helped the Eagles open the season with a 5-2 win over Middle Tennessee State University.

She teamed up with Colmenares and won their doubles match on court No. 1 before winning her singles match with a 6-2, 6-2 score.
 
One day later she faced Big Ten opponent Minnesota and rallied through three sets to prevail and clinch the match for FGCU, winning 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-4.

Matz has defeated No.1 players from Stetson, Queens and EKU and has won six doubles matches on court No. 1.

"Ashley has also been doing extremely well, playing in the number one position while just recently getting to college this semester," said Vernon.
 
Svensson has an 11-6 record mainly at No. 4 and has delivered non-conference wins over MTSU, Minnesota, Mercer, USF and South Alabama. She earned ASUN wins over Stetson, UCA, Queens, EKU, North Alabama and APSU.

She has an 8-10 record in doubles at No. 2 with Paloma Goldsmith and the pair has put away MTSU, Minnesota, Mercer, USF, Mercer, South Alabama, Stetson, UCA, Queens, EKU, North Alabama and APSU.

"Nora has been giving it her all and overall this entire group going to the tournament is doing very well and being positive leaders not just on the court but in the classroom and with our wonderful community,"  said Vernon.
 
 The four athletes were instrumental in leading FGCU to a 12-8 overall record and 6-3 league mark. 

Kotecha, Colmenares, Matz, Svensson and the fifth-seeded Eagles will begin their quest to become 2025 Atlantic Sun Conference Champions at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, taking on the fourth-seeded Lipscomb at University of North Florida .
