ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University Women's Tennis team continued its fall campaign at the ITA Southeast Regionals, hosted by University of Central Florida, and delivered the strongest showing in program history at the event.
"The ladies competed very hard at the ITA Regionals this past week," said head coach
Courtney Vernon. "We had three players qualify for the main draw and two players advance to the second round. The results speak for themselves for this group — disciplined on the court and in the classroom. They are looking forward to the Bonita Bay Collegiate Classic in a few weeks."
For the first time in program history, two Eagles advanced out of the qualifying round into the main draw. On the opening day of qualifying:
- Cecilie Maeland defeated Irene Serrano Maestre of Kennesaw State Owls 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-3.
- Anjali Kotecha won 6-3, 5-7 versus Maria Ivankovic of Kennesaw State.
- Sabarina Jaramillo secured a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Angelina Mihajlovic of Georgia Southern Eagles.
In the second round of qualifying the Eagles amassed three wins:
- June Bjork registered a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Daria Volosova of University of Miami.
- Anjali Kotecha defeated Lucia Cassidy of Florida Atlantic Owls 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
- Jaramillo handed Anastasija Adeikyte of Stetson Hatters a 7-5, 6-1 defeat.
During the main draw:
- Bjork defeated Valery Gynina of University of Florida… 1-6, 6-0, 6-3.
- Ashley Matz won her match against Clelia Lombardi of Stetson 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-4.
In the Round of 32 main draw, Bjork gave a gritty effort but ultimately fell 6-3, 7-5 to Mary Boyce Deatherage of Florida State Seminoles.
The Eagles will be in action this weekend in Boca Raton for the Battle of Boca.
