FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University men's tennis picked up a 5-2 win Tuesday over Furman at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
The Paladins secured the doubles point to start off the morning action, winning on courts two (7-5) and three (6-4). FGCU's No. 1 pair of Hugo Magnusson and Jonathan Baron turned in a 6-4 win, but Furman knocked off the Eagles on the next two courts just minutes later for the point.
Down 1-0, the Southwest Florida wind also decided to pick up across the courts. The Eagles accepted the challenge and spread their wings in singles action with two quick victories on courts two and four. Baron won 6-4, 6-2, and Pablo Paternostro went 6-2, 6-1 against his opponent to give FGCU a 2-1 lead. The Eagles were not satisfied.
Guglielmo Stefanacci tallied FGCU's third, two-set sweep of the day on court three, winning 6-3, 6-3. FGCU's No. 6 Stavros Hadjivarnava clinched the match 7-6 (7-1), 7-5, correcting a five-match skid for FGCU. Magnusson made it 5-1 Eagles by rallying to win in three sets, 3-6, 6-1 and 7-5.
Furman's lone singles win occurred on court five in a three-set affair to end the day. The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, March 11, to host VCU at 11 a.m.
