Hugo Magnusson defeated the #106 singles player in the country against Florida on Sunday but Florida Gulf Coast University men's tennis fell to the Gators 4-1.
"Credit to the Gators; they played well in the big moments," FGCU head coach
Josh Molino said. "Our guys fought incredibly hard and pushed an SEC team to the limit. We have come a long way since the start of the fall and will keep working towards playing our best tennis come April."
Magnusson won in straight sets on court one 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). The match between Magnusson and Henry Jefferson of Florida (4-2) was a contentious one with both players clawing for every point. This continued into the breaker in the second set with Magnusson falling behind early but climbing back for the 9-7 breaker and match win.
Singles play saw three courts go to a third set with courts two through four all going to the decisive third set, allowing for a path to victory for the Eagles (1-5).
Courts five and six went to the Gators early, giving them a 3-0 lead. Magnusson bounced back bringing the match score to 3-1.
The remaining three courts were all in a decisive third set.
The match would eventually be clinched on court two by former Eagle and two-time ASUN Player of the Year Magnus Johnson who defeated
Jonathan Baron 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Green and Blue will face Air Force and Navy on Feb 13 and 14 before returning for the home opener, a double header against Auburn on Feb 16.
