FORT MYERS, Fla. –
Nora Svensson clinched the match to help Florida Gulf Coast University women's tennis defeat Mercer University 4-2 Sunday in Macon, Georgia.
"This weekend was a great learning experience for the team," said FGCU head women's tennis coach
Courtney Vernon. "They were faced with a lot of adversity. and that is how we all grow. The team is looking forward to getting some rest and getting back to work next week."
The Eagles (3-2) got to work immediately as
Paloma Goldsmith and Svensson won 6-3 on court No. 2 and
Isabella Colmenares teamed up with
Ashley Matz to clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 victory on court No. 1.
The Bears (0-2) tied the match in singles action as Colmenares retired on court No. 2 due to an injury.
Anjali Kotecha placed the Green and Blue in front again winning 6-1, 6-4 on court No. 4.
Goldsmith made the Eagles' lead 3-1 with a 6-4, 7-5 victory on court No. 6. Matz battled through three sets, winning the first 6-4, before falling 6-3, 6-4 in the final two sets.
FGCU responded with Svensson rallying through three sets to win 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 and clinch the match against the Bears.
The Green and Blue will return to action Friday morning, hosting FAU (2-0) at 12 noon.
