Capan III completes second appearance at U.S. Open

Capan III placed higher than 10 former U.S. Open Champions, T41 overall

Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf alumnus Frankie Capan III completed his second U.S. Open appearance Sunday from Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Capan III made the cut Friday, becoming the first Eagle to ever do so at a major championship. The former Eagle has qualified for back-to-back U.S. Opens but failed to the cut a year ago. This time around, he opened the event with a one-over 71, climbing as high as sixth place without a bogey, and then solidified his opportunity to play into the weekend with an even-par 70 on Friday.

Notable household names did not make the cut at the 124th U.S. Open: Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Will Zalatoris, Max Homa, Victor Hovland and Tiger Woods all headed home early but not Capan III.

Heading into Saturday's third round, Capan III sat T21 at one-under-par. The Minnesota native struggled Saturday, shooting a 76 but turned in another impressive 71 on Sunday to finish eight-over for the tournament and T41.

The former Eagle tied or placed higher than 10 former U.S. Open Champions. On No. 14, Capan III executed a perfect up-and-down from a greenside bunker, tapping in for birdie, to highlight his final round.

He hit nine of 13 fairways on championship Sunday and seven of 17 greens in regulation. For the tournament, he hit 29 of 55 fairways (53 percent) and only 30 of 71 greens (42 percent), facing daunting layouts in the sandhills of the Tar Heel State.

Capan III aims to earn his PGA Tour card as a current No. 9 overall on the Korn Ferry Tour. The top 30 on the points list will earn their card.
