Men's golf places third at Rutherford Intercollegiate

Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf finished third Sunday at the Rutherford Intercollegiate from State College, Pennsylvania.

FGCU climbed up four positions during Sunday's final round for its fourth top-three performance of the season. The Eagles (+28) opened the tournament with 303 and closed with an even-par 284. Tournament host Penn State comfortably walked away with the team title at six-over.

Three Eagles managed to card a par or better round Sunday courtesy of Austin Chericehlla, Joseph Sullivan and Sebastian Gamboa. Sullivan improved each round and turned in a Sunday team-low 68, tying for 18th on the player leaderboard.

Gamboa paced the FGCU starting five, tying for 12th place at six-over-par. Gamboa started off his day with a birdie and then sank back-to-back birdies on holes 12 and 13.

Cherichella's final-round 70 slotted himself T15 while entering the clubhouse one final time. He produced his best round of the tournament Sunday, a one-under 70 scorecard that spotted an eagle on hole No. 10.

Competing as an individual, Sam Baker dazzled in round two with a tournament and career-low round of 66. Baker finished higher than any Eagle at the event, placing 11th overall behind a season-best effort.

The sophomore eagled hole No. 9 twice throughout the course of the tournament. Baker emerged as one of only two golfers in the entire field to tally not one but two eagles.

The Eagles shift their focus toward the ASUN Championship on April 21-23 in Dothan, Alabama.
