Eagles finish ninth at Schenkel Invitational

Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf completed its second tournament of the week, placing ninth Sunday at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Georgia.

"I'm really proud of the team as we had three rounds under par this week," head coach Andrew Danna said. "The team is looking forward to the next opportunity to compete at Texas A&M."

The Eagles played six rounds and 108 holes in just seven days. FGCU opened the event Friday with a five-under showing (283), then shot one-under Saturday (287) and closed with a two-under (286) round on Sunday to finish at five-under par.

No. 17 Florida won the team title at 22-under. South Carolina's Nathan Franks captured the individual title at 10-under, carding three rounds in the 60's. FGCU sank the second most pars (178) among the 14-team field.

Four Eagles turned in a par or better scorecard during Sunday's final round. Joseph Sullivan (-5) tied for 14th on the player leaderboard to lead the FGCU starting five, emerging as one of only two Eagles to shoot par or better each round of the event. Sullivan fired a team-low, four-under 68 in the second round.

Matt Millar (-1) also produced an even-par or lower round each day, tying for 36th. Brody Stevenson (-3) hit the red numbers twice, highlighted by an opening-round 69, and entered the clubhouse Sunday tied for 23rd overall.

Sam Baker (+3) improved each round by shaving one stroke daily. Baker's even-par 72 Sunday positioned him tied for 55th.

FGCU returns to the course April 6-7 to compete in the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational in College Station, Texas.
