Men's Tennis Ready to Host Lipscomb, Jacksonville State

The Eagles will honor Juan Montes and Pedro Maciel Friday evening for Senior Night

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The #72 FGCU men's tennis team closes out the home regular-season schedule this weekend as they play host to Lipscomb, Friday at 5 p.m. and Jacksonville State, Sunday at 10 a.m. It will not be the final matches at the FGCU Tennis Complex as the Eagles will host the ASUN Championship from April 22-24.

The Eagles are currently 11-6 on the season and 4-1 in ASUN play, tied atop the standings with Kennesaw State and North Florida. Lipscomb is 4-11 this season with a 1-4 mark in league play while the Gamecocks are 7-7 and 2-3 in the ASUN.

Friday evening against Lipscomb will also be Senior Night for the Eagles as they will honor Juan Montes and Pedro Maciel before the match. Montes is a five-year member of the Green and Blue and is a two-time All-ASUN selection. Maciel has been with the Eagles for four years, contributing the Eagles run of success with solid play in both singles and doubles.

For the first time this season, the FGCU men's tennis team has entered the ITA top-75 rankings, clocking in at No. 72. The Eagles are one of three ASUN teams in the rankings this week as Liberty comes in at #69 while North Florida checks in just ahead of the Eagles at #71. TCU sits atop the poll, reclaiming the top spot after being #3 last week.

Against Kennesaw last week, the Green and Blue took down the Owls, 5-2, winning five of the six singles matches to improve to 4-1 in the ASUN, sitting atop the ASUN standings with the Owls and North Florida. Redshirt-sophomore Magnus Johnson (Naples, Fla./Homeschool/UCF) picked up his team-leading 13th win of the spring, winning 6-4, 6-4 on court one.

Redshirt-sophomore Randy Wilson (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Miami Palmetto/Louisville) also won on court three, coming from behind to win in three sets for his fifth-straight win to improve to 11-3 this year.

In doubles, Johnson and junior Max Damm (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) lead the Eagles with 10 wins while Wilson and sophomore Eric Oncins (Orlando, Fla./Montverde Academy) are tied with Montes and redshirt-sophomore Marcelo Sepulveda (Monterrey, Mexico/Penn Foster/Alabama).

CJ WEBER
FGCU is led by three-time ASUN Coach of the Year CJ Weber, who has coached 32 ASUN All-Conference selections since joining the Green and Blue in 2011. In his seventh year, Weber has compiled a 114-83 (.577) overall record and a 47-19 (.707) record in ASUN play. In 2014-15, Weber guided the Eagles to their first-ever ASUN Championship and first-ever ASUN Regular Season title after a program-best 17 wins. In his third season, Weber led Jordi Vives to a No. 35 national ranking, a nation-leading 14-match unbeaten streak and the round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament - the program's first appearance. The Eagles completed a perfect ASUN regular season in both 2015 and 2016, finishing with conference titles as well as a Coach of the Year honor for Weber. FGCU again won the 2017 ASUN Championship and made its second NCAA appearance. The Eagles returned to the mountaintop by claiming the 2019 regular season and tournament championships. Weber earned his third ASUN Coach of the Year honor and led the Green and Blue to their third trip to the NCAA Tournament.
