No. 20 Beach Volleyball Splits Opening Day of Palmetto Invitational

Snowy Burnam moves into second-place tie for career wins with 61.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After falling to No. 14 Georgia State to open day one of the Palmetto Invitational, the No. 20 FGCU beach volleyball team bounced back to defeat Coastal Carolina in the afternoon session on Friday at South Carolina's Wheeler Beach Courts. With a win against the Chanticleers, FGCU graduate Snowy Burnam moved into a tie for second all-time with her 61st career win.

The results moved the Eagles to 21-8 overall on the year, while Georgia State improved to 20-11 overall including its win over the College of Charleston. Coastal Carolina fell to 17-12 including its loss to No. 18 South Carolina.

"I thought we played pretty consistent and patient volleyball against a very well coached Georgia State team," said head coach Chris Sweat. "They made some great plays and came up with some close wins. Maddie [Parmelly] and Kacie [Johnson] played one of their best games of the year, and I'm happy to see all their hard work and dedication to their craft paying off."

Parmelly and Johnson defeated Georgia State's top pair of Kelly Dorn and Elise Saga 21-18, 21-15 for the Eagles' lone win of the opening match. Burnam and Cortney VanLiew played a tightly contested fourth flight (21-16, 21-19), while Kaitlyn Luebbers and Emma Hansen dropped a tight three-set fifth flight with the second and third sets each decided by just two points.

In the win over Coastal Carolina, Parmelly and Johnson earned the match-clinching point to secure the team win. Hansen and Luebbers earned a quick win in the fifth flight for the Eagles' first point of the day, while Burnam and VanLiew extended the lead to 2-0. The Chanticleers earned a point in the third flight to make the lead 2-1 before Parmelly and Johnson won 21-18, 21-15 in the No. 1 flight.

Hansen moved into a tie for sixth all-time in program history for career wins with her 50th alongside FGCU Hall of Famer Amanda Carroll.

FGCU will close out the regular-season on Saturday against host South Carolina in a top-20 match-up starting at 11 AM before taking on the College of Charleston at 1 PM. Following this weekend's play, the Eagles will play in the ASUN Championship on April 22-25 in Huntsville, Ala.
