JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The FGCU beach volleyball team (15-13) concluded its regular season by splitting a pair of matches against Jacksonville (W, 4-1) and North Florida (L, 3-2) at the Payne Sand Courts at Dolphin Beach on Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles will now prepare for the ASUN Championship, where they will open as the No. 3 overall seed on Friday against sixth-seeded North Alabama at 12 p.m. The winner of the match will face either No. 2 North Florida or No. 7 Jacksonville at 4 p.m. on Friday in the winner's bracket semifinals. The double-elimination tournament, which will be hosted by Stetson University in Deland, Fla., will conclude with Sunday's championship round.
"We played well through some tough, rainy conditions in our first match, but were way too inconsistent in our second match," FGCU head coach
Chris Sweat said. "With four of the five pairs going to a third set, you have to get up in that moment and that is something we didn't do well today. The 2's battling to a 33-31 victory in the third set was great preparation for the conference tournament, and I'm looking forward to our last week of practice to put in the work and get ready for the tournament."
That third-set victory came via
Kayla Whetstone and
Kacie Johnson, who grinded out a 21-19, 21-23, 33-31 win over UNF's Callie Workman and Taryn Griffey. In doing so,
Whetstone (Arlington, Texas/Arlington Lamar HS) became the first player in program history to record multiple 20-win seasons.
Johnson (Frisco, Texas/Lebanon Trail HS), meanwhile, became the first 20-win rookie at FGCU. In fact, she becomes just the fifth player all-time with at least one such season, joining Whetstone (24-5 in 2019, 20-8 in 2021),
Snowy Burnam (24-5 in 2019), Karissa Rhoades (20-8 in 2019) and Katie Puisis (20-8 in 2019).

The team victory over Jacksonville to open the day gave FGCU the program record for most regular season victories, breaking a tie with the 2019 team. The Eagles will now look to tie or break that 2019 team's overall wins record of 18.
Emma Hansen and
Madie Lichty (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) went 2-0 on Sunday with wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 pairs, improving their season record together to 16-11, which is the second-best record among all Eagle pairs.
Hansen (Trophy Club, Texas/Westlake Academy) is also two victories shy of 30 in her career.
Maddison Parmelly (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall Heath HS), who went 3-1 as a freshman in last year's Covid-19 shortened season, produced a win at No. 2 against Jacksonville along with
Kirstine Garder (Halden, Norway/Topvolley Norge) to move within one win of becoming the 17th player with 20 wins in a career.
Trinity Rosales (Wilmington, N.C./Eugene Ashley HS), who went 1-1 at No. 5 with
Jenna Banz (Cambridge, Ontario, Canada/St. Benedict Catholic Secondary/Hawaii) on Sunday, needs just one more win to give the Eagles three 15-win freshmen for the first time in program history.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 85 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 40 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 21, 2020-21), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2021) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 23 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall, 2020 Spring, and 2020 Fall semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
