FORT MYERS, FL – Following one of the most highly-attended matches in program history, the FGCU men's tennis team (3-4) will hit the road for a pair of contests against UNC Greensboro (1-1) and UNC Wilmington (4-4). Both matches are slated for Noon start times at the UNCW Courts. The Eagles will take on the Spartans on Saturday, Feb. 22 before facing off against the Seahawks on Sunday, Feb. 23.
FGCU will look to get back into the win column following its most recent competition against Miami (Feb. 15), where the Hurricanes, which have multiple players that are ranked in the ITA standings, earned a 4-0 sweep over the Eagles. Though the teams did not play the match out once Miami had clinched, both seniors
Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School) and
Marcelo Tebet (Londrina, Brazil/Colegio Anglo Americano) were forcing their singles play opponents into three sets on courts one and three, respectively.
Ramirez has been on a hot streak for the Green and Blue, as he is currently on a five-match unbeaten streak on the top court in singles play. Additionally, the doubles team of Tebet and junior
Juan Montes (Pereira, Colombia/Colegio Lujan) has also been heating up for the Eagles. Since falling in the match against Georgia Southern, the team has remained unbeaten.
This weekend's competition will feature some fairly new competition for FGCU. The Eagles have only played the Seahawks twice, with the first meeting coming during the 2018 season, and have never played the Spartans. The history between FGCU and UNC Wilmington currently sits at 1-1. After the Seahawks earned a 4-3 victory in 2018 at the end of a neutral site match in Orlando, the Eagles picked up a win by the same score last season at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
The Spartans
Saturday's match will be the third of the year for UNC Greensboro, which enters the season sitting at .500.
In their season-opener, the Spartans downed Winthrop 5-2 before dropping at 4-3 result to Furman. Junior Nico Grewe, who plays in the fourth spot, is the only player that has posted an unblemished mark in singles play so far this year.
UNC Greensboro will look to bounce back this year after finishing last season at 7-15, with a 1-6 mark in conference play. Prior to the 2018-19 season, the Spartans had reached double-digit wins for two-consecutive years.
The Seahawks
UNC Wilmington enters this weekend's competition having won four of its last five matches. The Seahawks also own an undefeated, 3-0 mark on their home courts.
In its most recent outing, UNC Wilmington earned a hard-fourth, 4-3 triumph over its rival the College of Charleston on the road. That score marked the team's smallest margin of victory this season. Its largest was a clean, 7-0 sweep over Radford at the beginning of the season.
Sophomores Bruno Caula and David Innocenti have each achieved the five-win mark in singles play. Caula owns a 5-2 mark on the top court, while Innocenti's 5-1 record comes from the fifth slot.
Caula and senior Daniel Groom currently check in at 60th in the ITA's doubles rankings. The duo is 4-3 on the season and is currently on a three-match winning streak.

CJ WEBER
FGCU is led by three-time ASUN Coach of the Year CJ Weber,
who has coached 32 ASUN All-Conference selections since joining the Green and Blue in 2011. In his seventh year, Weber has compiled a 96-81 (.542) overall record and a 38-18 (.672) record in ASUN play. In 2014-15, Weber guided the Eagles to their first-ever ASUN Championship and first-ever ASUN Regular Season title after a program-best 17 wins. In his third season, Weber led Jordi Vives to a No. 35 national ranking, a nation-leading 14-match unbeaten streak and the round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament - the program's first appearance. The Eagles completed a perfect ASUN regular season in both 2015 and 2016, finishing with conference titles as well as a Coach of the Year honor for Weber. FGCU again won the 2017 ASUN Championship and made its second NCAA appearance. The Eagles returned to the mountaintop by claiming the 2019 regular season and tournament championships. Weber earned his third ASUN Coach of the Year honor and led the Green and Blue to their third trip to the NCAA Tournament.
