FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the first time this season, the FGCU men's tennis team (1-2) will hit the road for a pair of matches against FAU (2-5) and Bethune-Cookman (0-1). The Eagles will kick off the in-state swing with a 1:30 p.m. contest against the Owls on Friday, Jan. 31. The match between FGCU and the Wildcats is slated for a 2 p.m. start the following day.
After almost a two-week break, the Eagles are ready to return to action. In its final match before the brief hiatus, FGCU earned a decisive, 6-1 victory over the FAMU Rattlers at the FGCU Tennis Complex (Jan. 18). After clinching the early doubles point via a win from senior
Marcelo Tebet (Londrina, Brazil) and junior
Juan Montes (Pereira, Colombia), the home team cruised through doubles play. Montes had one of the team's strongest performances, allowing his opponent to score just one point through two sets.
Entering this weekend's matches, the Green and Blue own a combined 12-8 record against the two teams. While the all-time history between the Eagles and the Owls favors the latter 4-8, FGCU owns an 8-0 mark against Bethune-Cookman.
FAU kicked off its season with a 4-0 sweep over the FAMU Rattlers before dropping its next two matches, including a 7-0 loss to No. 1 Florida. Overall, the Owls have lost four of their last five matches with the lone win coming from a 4-3 triumph over Eastern Tennessee. After posting a team-best 17-5 mark in singles play last season, sophomore Alvaro Fernandez Horta is off to a 1-4 start this season. He and the rest of the Owls will look to get back into the win column after posting a 19-10 record last season.
Bethune-Cookman enters Saturday's match having played in just one other contest this season, a 5-2 loss at the hands of Stetson. During the match against the Hatters, sophomore Victor Castro and freshman Gerhard Sullwald were the only two players to defend their courts in singles play. Last year, the Wildcats finished the season 7-10 with a split 2-2 mark in MEAC Conference play.

CJ WEBER
FGCU is led by three-time ASUN Coach of the Year CJ Weber,
who has coached 32 ASUN All-Conference selections since joining the Green and Blue in 2011. In his seventh year, Weber has compiled a 94-79 (.543) overall record and a 38-18 (.672) record in ASUN play. In 2014-15, Weber guided the Eagles to their first-ever ASUN Championship and first-ever ASUN Regular Season title after a program-best 17 wins. In his third season, Weber led Jordi Vives to a No. 35 national ranking, a nation-leading 14-match unbeaten streak and the round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament - the program's first appearance. The Eagles completed a perfect ASUN regular season in both 2015 and 2016, finishing with conference titles as well as a Coach of the Year honor for Weber. FGCU again won the 2017 ASUN Championship and made its second NCAA appearance. The Eagles returned to the mountaintop by claiming the 2019 regular season and tournament championships. Weber earned his third ASUN Coach of the Year honor and led the Green and Blue to their third trip to the NCAA Tournament.
