Marck-Sherk, Edmonds Garner ASUN Awards

BRASELTON, Ga. - Madeline Marck-Sherk and Laura Edmonds were honored by the ASUN this evening as the conference announced its postseason awards during the annual pre-tournament banquet.

Marck-Sherk (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway Crystal Beach HS) was named Second Team All-ASUN and earned a spot on the all-academic team, while Edmonds (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Cypress Bay HS) also landed on the second-team and was a unanimous selection to the all-freshmen team.

"I am so happy for Madeline and Laura on their accomplishments," FGCU head coach Sarah Trew said. "Both of them have been steady players for us throughout the entire year and have been a big part of our record setting season."

Marck-Sherk is averaging a career-low 74.83 strokes per 18 holes over a team-high 23 rounds. She has produced four par-or-better rounds this year, including three under par and a season-low of 70. Her top two finishes included a tie for 10th in the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate on April 2 and a 12th-place tie in the Amelia Island Collegiate on Feb. 19.

The senior is one of 41 players in ASUN history to have two top-10 finishes at the ASUN Championship, including one of only four in program history. Her 15 par-or-better rounds in nearly four years is tied for a program-record. She is a three-time ASUN golfer of the week, a 2017 Second-Team All-ASUN selection and a 2016 ASUN All-Freshmen Team selection.

"Madeline has been such a solid player for us the last four years," Trew said. "I am so happy that she was honored. She isn't the flashiest player but she is so gritty and no one works harder than her. Madeline is one of the most selfless players I have ever coached. I have never seen anyone that cares more about her teammates and she is truly deserving of being recognized.

Academically, Marck-Sherk carries a 3.660 cumulative GPA as an exercise science major. She is a one-time President's List selection, a four-time Dean's List recipient, a two-time AD's honor roll member and a two-time WGCA Scholar All-American honoree.

"Madeline is the definition of student athlete," Trew said. "So puts so much work in her studies and on the course, and I could not be more proud of her. This past year, she has had to balance working an internship anywhere from 30-40 hours a week on top of golf and she still manages to be our hardest worker. She has set the bar high for those that will follow in her footsteps."

Edmonds, meanwhile, had one of the best rookie campaigns in program history. She burst onto the scene with a team-best 73.40 stroke average, which is on pace to shatter the program's single-season record of 74.08 by Briana Carlson in 2010-11. In seven tournaments and 20 rounds, she has produced six par-or-better rounds, which is one shy of the program's single-season record. She's had three rounds in the 60's and won the Amelia Island Collegiate on Feb. 19. She became the youngest player in program history to earn ASUN golfer of the week recognition on Oct. 4, and she added one more on Feb. 21. At the Johnie Imes Invite, she broke the program's 36-hole record with a 138.

"Laura has had an amazing year so far with a tournament win and a runner-up finish," Trew said. "She has been our most consistent player throughout the year. She always amazes me at her maturity and composure on the course, especially for her age. I cannot wait to see what great things are ahead of her."

Notes
The all-freshmen team selection marks the fifth-consecutive season the Eagles have had a player make the team, joining Natalia Nassar (2018), Kate Williamson (2017), Marck-Sherk (2016) and Madison Easterbrook (2015). Other members include: Kristin Swindell (2013), Briana Carlson (2010) and Kastania Toomalatai (2008).

For Marck-Sherk, it is her second career all-freshmen team selection (2016), and she becomes just the second multiple all-conference selection in program history (Briana Carlson - 2014, 2011, 2010)

COACH TREW
Since taking over the program in 2011, Sarah Trew has guided the Eagles to 36 top-five finishes, including six in each of the past three seasons. On top of that, she led the program to a pair of second-place finishes in the ASUN Championship in 2016 and 2017, which signifies the best finishes in program history.

Over the past three years, the 2015-16 ASUN Coach of the Year has led the Green and Blue to its three best seasons in program history in stroke average, birdies, par-3 scoring, par-4 scoring and par-5 scoring. Her 2017-18 team tied the program record for low round with a 290 (+2) in the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational and also tied the record for best 36-hole total in the same event (589, +13). Her 2012-13 team holds the 54-hole record of 887 (+23) in the ASUN Championship, but her 2017-18 team holds the third-best mark with an 895 (+31) in the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational.

Trew was instrumental in FGCU's six top-five finishes in 2017-18. The highlight of the season came when the team captured first-place in the MSU Citrus Classic, signifying the program's first outright tournament championship since March 2008. She previously led the team to a share of first-place in the FGCU Eagle Invitational on Sept. 16, 2013.

The 2018 season also witnessed Natalia Nassar capture the ASUN Conference's Freshman of the Year award, which represented the program's first-ever major athletic award recipient. Also, for the first time since 2011, the team claimed three ASUN golfer of the week recipients - Katie Williamson (March 22), Madeline Marck-Sherk (March 15) and Nassar (Feb. 8) in the same season. It was also just the second time in program history the team won the award in back-to-back weeks. Overall, last year's trio represents one-third of the program's nine weekly recipients since Trew took over.
