FORT MYERS,
Fla. – After a top swim in the final event of the day, the FGCU swimming and diving team could not hold on as it fell to Northwestern in a dual-meet 111.5-93.5 on Sunday at the FGCU Aquatics Center.
The morning started off with the 400 yard medley relay as the Eagle quartet of
Doris Eichhorn (Berlin, Germany/HTW Berlin),
Petra Halmai (Dombovar, Hungary/Lanczos Kornel Secondari Grammar School),
Cassidy Fry (Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood HS), and
Gracie Redding (Orlando, Fla./The First Academy) clocked in with a time of 3:48.45, earning them four points behind Northwestern's 11.
"This meet comes at a strange time of the year, since we were not supposed to be in the midst of finals," FGCU Head Coach
Dave Rollins, said. "However, I was very proud of the way we competed and supported each other today. Northwestern is a very well coached team and did a great job. This was another opportunity for us to compete with a top level Power 5 opponent and for us to be very competitive with them is a great sign for the rest of the season."
The 1000 yard freestyle, the longest event of the meet, saw
Elizabeth Zeiger (Cumberland, R.I./ Homeschool) clocking in with her season-best time of 10:10.82, earning her nine points.
Antonia Baerens (Ottobrunn, Germany/Max-Josef-Stif) finished in 10:37.82 giving the Green and Blue a 14 point total through two events.
The third event saw a trio of Eagles fall into second, third, and fourth place in the 200 yard freestyle.
Hannah Burdge (Stuart, Fla./Martin County HS) swam a time of 1:54.32 earning her four points.
Hannah Wittman (Jupiter, Fla./Central Bucks East HS) recorded her season-best with a time of 1:55.23, while Fry swam less than a second faster in 1:54.86 as Northwestern maintained their lead, 32-23.
A quick 23 seconds passed in event four, as Eichhorn led the way for The Green and Blue in the 50 yard freestyle with a new season-best time of 23.81. Redding came in .5 seconds after her teammate as she scored 4 points for the Eagles. Freshman
Rebecca Moynihan (Palmerston North, New Zealand/Waiopehu College) placed fourth in the event in 23.89, adding a point to the total score as well.
Northwestern started to pull away in the 200 yard individual medley as they took a 55-38 lead after five events. Halmai took second place overall, but finished first for the Green and Blue with a time of 2:04.73. Zeiger stopped the clock at 2:09.26 adding two points to the overall 38.
FGCU fought back in the 6th event as
Christina Kaas Elmgreen (Charlottenlund, Denmark/Ordrup Gymnasium) and Fry gave the Eagles 13 points alone pulling them within eight from the Wildcats. Elmgreen registered a time of 2:02.14, while Fry touched the pad shortly after in 2:02.97. Junior
Nicole Oppel (LeClaire, Iowa/Pleasant Valley HS) finished fifth for The Green and Blue in 2:13.15.
The 100 yard freestyle saw Burdge finishing tied-second with a time of 51.73. Moynihan and Redding finished less than a second apart as they each tallied points for the Green and Blue, as the Wildcats edge out 72.5 to 58.5 through seven events.
Halmai swam strong for the Eagles in the 200 yard backstroke as she tallied four points and recorded a season-best time of 2:03.18. Eichhorn had a close finish as she scored three points in 2:03.76. The Wildcats started to add more points to their lead as Calypso Sheridan finished first in the event giving Northwestern an overall 19 point margin.
Just before the second 20-minute break, Zeiger swam her way to another season-best finish in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:01.15. Baerens who competed in the two longest events of the day, finished in 5:13.48, respectively. Sydney Modeas finished second for Northwestern adding four points to its total score. Through nine events, the Wildcats extended their lead 92.5 to 76.5.
Calypso Sheridan swam strong for the Wildcats as she finished first for the fourth time on the day. Halmai, who finished in the top spot for the Eagles in four events, swam the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:19.87.
Sommer Harris (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine's School) tallied one point for the Green and Blue as she finished in 2:23.66.
The final event of the day saw the Eagle relay group of Redding, Eichhorn, Moynihan, and Burdge finishing first in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:34.02. The quartet grabbed 11 points, but could not chip away at the Northwestern lead, as the Wildcats defeated FGCU 111.5-93.5.
The Green and Blue will be back in action on Dec. 21 against Toledo at 11 a.m. at the FGCU Aquatics Complex. FGCU will then host the Triple Distance Classic on Jan. 5, which features schools from Rutgers, St Louis, Gustavus, and Liberty.

HEAD COACH DAVE ROLLINS
In his first year with the program in 2016-17, head coach Dave Rollins led FGCU to its eighth CCSA Championship in a span of nine years and guided the Eagles 200 free relay team to All-American honors. FGCU registered points at the NCAA Championships for the fourth-straight season and ultimately turned in its third-best finish all-time (T-41st). Prior to FGCU, Rollins was the associate head men's swimming coach at Ohio State University and brought 10 years of coaching experience at the club, high school and collegiate levels. A standout collegiate athlete in his own right, Rollins was a nine-time NCAA All-American and national champion as a member of the University of Arizona swimming & diving team from 2002-06.
TOYS FOR TOTS
The FGCU Athletics Department, FGCU Police Department, Lee County Sheriff's Office and Heroes Unlimited have teamed up to participate in a holiday toy drive. New, unwrapped toys are being collected and will be delivered to the Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida on Friday, Dec. 23. Collection boxes have been placed in the lobbies of Alico Arena, UPD and the FGCU Family Resource Center until Wednesday, Dec. 20. No toy is too small, and all toys will be wrapped prior to delivery.
