COLUMBUS, Ohio - After a FGCU program record-setting day on Day 2 of the Ohio State Invitational, the women's swimming and diving team remain in 10th place with a tally of 101 points on Saturday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Eagles had 27 season-best times and four new top-ten program records in the afternoon.
The Eagles biggest swim of the night came off foursome team
Sommer Harris (Richmond, VA./St. Catherine's School),
Doris Eichhorn (Berlin, Germany/HTW Berlin),
Cassidy Fry (Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood HS), and
Gracie Redding (Orlando, Fla./The First Academy) in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. They finished less than a second behind Washington State University with a time of 1:40.47. In 17th came
Kylie Eble (Cleveland, Ohio/Gilmour HS),
Petra Halmai (Dombovar, Hungary/Lanczos Kornel Secondari Grammar School),
Madison Jean (Parrish, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS), and
Hannah Burdge (Stuart, Fla./Martin County HS) with a time of 1:42.91. The last FGCU relay team to touch the wall finished in 28th place, respectively, with a time of x145:32.
In addition to Redding, three more swimmers made the NCAA B Cuts with their performances in the Invitational. Fry,
Christina Kaas Elmgreen (Charlottenlund, Denmark/Ordrup Gymnasium), and Eichhorn will represent for the Green and Blue. In the 100 Yard Butterfly, fourth place Fry clocked in with a time of 53.59 which gave her the fifth fastest time in FGCU history. Kaas Elmgreen finished shortly behind her with an NCAA B Cut qualifying time of 54.44. Halmai swam to an eighth best program history time of 55.35, while Redding finished 2nd in the C Final with a time of 54.88.
"We had a great second day. After a very strong morning session, the team was challenged to find details they can improve on," FGCU head coach
Dave Rollins said. "We had six new all-time top 10 swims, three NCAA B cuts and
Hannah Soutar (Edinburgh, Scotland/Broughton HS), after taking a year away from the sport, went a life time best 100 breaststroke. We are looking forward to building on the success of today for tomorrow and the rest of the season."
Elizabeth Zeiger (Cumberland, R.I./ Homeschool) was the only Eagle to place in the C Final of the 400 Individual Medley with a time of 4:27.23. The 17th event featured the 200 Yard Freestyle where
Antonia Baerens (Ottobrunn, Germany/Max-Josef-Stift) touched the wall first for the Eagles with a time of 1:49.73, while Fry would come in a second later at 1:50.96.
Soutar's career fastest time in the 100 Yard Breaststroke would give her a 3rd place finish in the D Finals with a time of 1:03.49. Her teammates Harris (1:03.75) and Halmai (1:03.97) would complete their times shortly after. Eichhorn was the only FGCU swimmer to place in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 55:07.
The final event of Day 2 saw the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay in which FGCU placed in the top 15 in front of host school Ohio State University. The team of Burdge, Fry, Baerens, and anchor
Linda Shaw (Leeds, United Kingdom/Roundhay HS) finished with a time of 7:22.77. The second foursome clocked in a time of 7:37.48 for the last swim of the night for FGCU.
