FRESNO, Calif. – The FGCU women's golf team concluded play at the 2016 Fresno State Classic with a 13th place finish. The Eagles produced a team round of 321 Tuesday, Mar. 8 at the San Joaquin Country Club and finished play with a total score of 631.
Â
FGCU's plus-55 total of 631 placed the Eagles just two strokes behind 12th place Montana and ahead of Grand Canyon and Idaho. The Eagles shot a 610 in Monday's first round to hold 10th place, but added 11 strokes to their second-round score to drop in the standings among the strong 15-team field.
Â
Host Fresno State earned the tournament championship with a two-round score of 577 (286-291), while Boise State, CSU Fullerton, Santa Clara and New Mexico State rounded out the top five, each with a two-round score under 600. Â
Â
"Overall, we are disappointed with our finish," said head coach
Sarah Trew. "We need to work on recovering quicker from minor mistakes with smart, steady play instead of trying to force birdies. We've had a very busy spring schedule so we're looking forward to having more practice time to prepare for our next event."
Â
Senior
Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/ S.M.K. Cochrane) led the Eagles in the two-day event. Yong carded a 77 in the first round and cut one stroke off for a 76 in Tuesday's play to finish at 153. The senior was up and down in her first three holes before adding three strokes between 14 and 16. Yong settled in after seven holes and fired 10 even-par scores in her last 11 holes. She finished the round at plus-4 and tied for 41st among the field of over 80 golfers.

Sophomore
Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) matched her first-round score with a 79 in the second round Tuesday to finish at 158. Easterbrook carded four bogeys and two birdies on her first nine and went into the second half of her four at plus-2. She ended the round with three bogeys and five par holes before dropping a double on the final hole to finish at plus-7.

Freshmen
Madeline Marck-Sherk (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway Crystal Beach High School) and

Head coach Sarah Trew enters her fifth season at the helm of the FGCU women's golf team. Trew took over in 2011 and has since guided the Eagles to the program's best-ever finish in the Atlantic Sun Tournament and to 20+ top-10 finishes. A year ago, Trew led the team to several records on and off the course. The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically. The team earned a team grade point average of 3.8 in the fall semester and set the FGCU team record with a 3.92 during the spring of 2014. The spring of 2015 saw the Eagles again take third place at the A-Sun Championship, and recording their best team score of the season.Â
