SHIZUOKA, Japan - Florida Gulf Coast's women's golf team sits eighth through the opening round of the Pan Pacific University Golf Super League Tournament at Grand Fields Country Club. The Eagles posted a 20-over total of 304.
FGCU trails leader Nihon by 33 shots and sits five back of seventh-place Tohoku Fukushi at the par-71, 6,164-yard layout. Round two continues Thursday, Sept. 3 locally (Wednesday, Sept. 2 stateside).
Sarah Hyten led the way for the Eagles with a 75 (+4), tying for 66th in the combined men's and women's standings. She opened with two bogeys on the front nine for a 2-over 38, then found her lone birdie of the day at the par-4 15th before three late bogeys pushed her to a 2-over 37 coming home.
Annie Yost and
Sydney Deal are tied for 78th after matching rounds of 76 (+5). Yost made the turn at 3-over 39 after a rough stretch that included a double bogey and a bogey, then added two birdies on the back nine but couldn't offset four more bogeys for a 2-over 37. Deal opened rough with a double bogey at the par-5 first but answered with a birdie at the seventh for a 4-over 40 on the front, then steadied herself with back-to-back birdies to start the back nine on the way to a 1-over 36.
Charlene Lamb is tied for 88th after carding a 77 (+6). She birdied the opening hole and turned in 1-over 37, but a double bogey and three bogeys on the back nine led to a 5-over 40 coming home.
Gia Culler-Guerra rounded out the FGCU lineup at 78 (+7) and is tied for 98th. She played the front nine in 4-over 40 with four bogeys, then mixed two birdies with three bogeys and a double bogey on the back for a 3-over 38.
