FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – The FGCU women's golf team moved up three positions in the standings during the final round of competition the Amelia Island Collegiate Tuesday, Feb. 23. The Eagles carded a final-round team score of 309 at the Amelia Island Golf Club to finish ninth in the field of 16 teams.

With the total 917 score, FGCU finished just five strokes behind the eighth-place finisher and 21 strokes from the top-five. The University of North Florida earned the team championship at 879 (285-294-300), with Cincinnati, Campbell, Kennesaw State and Bradley rounding out the top five. FGCU's team score included rounds of 307, 301 and 309.

The Eagles jumped ahead of Memphis, Jacksonville State and Southern Mississippi State during the third round and finished better than Wofford, Georgia State, host Jacksonville and Winthrop.

"I'm very proud of Myka and Madeline for their focus and steady play today," said head coach
Sarah Trew. "Overall, we had a lot of birdies as a team, but our mistakes were too costly. We have some work to do to dial in our ball striking and short games so all five players bring their best every day and especially at the conference tournament."

Senior
Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) led the Green and Blue in the No. 1 position with a seventh-place finish and a total score of 220. Yong carded rounds of 73 and 71 in the first day of play and followed with a 76 in Tuesday's round. The senior fell behind one stroke on her fourth hole and dropped back-to-back holes midway through the round. Yong rebounded with nine even scores on her last 10 holes to finish at plus-4 on the day and among the field's top players.

Freshman
Madeline Marck-Sherk (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway Crystal Beach High School) carded a plus-3 score of 75 in Tuesday's round to finish in a tie for 22nd with a three-round score of 225. The rookie started strong with a birdie on her second hole but dropped three strokes on the next five holes to take the turn at plus-4. Marck-Sherk rebounded with a birdie on hole 2 and finished with seven-straight even-par holes for the third-round score of 75.

Transfer
Megan Blonien (Altus, Okla./Altus High School/Oklahoma State) played an up-and-down round to conclude the Amelia Island event and finished with a third-round score of 75. Blonien took a 38th place finish with a total score of 229 (80-74-75). In Tuesday's play, Blonien went 3-under quickly with birdies on three of her first six holes. However, she carded a triple on 18 to move to even after seven holes. She added another triple on hole 3 to fall to plus-3 and added strokes on hole 4 and 5 to move to plus-5. Blonien finished with two birdies and three even holes to end at plus-3 on the day.

Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) and
Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) rounded out the Eagle lineup with three-round totals of 244 and 249, respectively. Easterbrook carded an 84 in the final round, with Detlefsen finishing with an 83.

The Eagles continue the spring slate in two weeks with a trip to the West Coast. The team travels to Fresno, Calif. for the two-day Fresno State Tournament on Monday, Mar. 7 and Tuesday, Mar. 8. The two-day event at San Joaquin Country Club marks the team's first trip to California since the 2007-08 season.

Head coach Sarah Trew enters her fifth season at the helm of the FGCU women's golf team. Trew took over in 2011 and has since guided the Eagles to the program's best-ever finish in the Atlantic Sun Tournament and to 20+ top-10 finishes. A year ago, Trew led the team to several records on and off the course. The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically. The team earned a team grade point average of 3.8 in the fall semester and set the FGCU team record with a 3.92 during the spring of 2014. The spring of 2015 saw the Eagles again take third place at the A-Sun Championship, and recording their best team score of the season.Â
