INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – With her first collegiate season approaching, FGCU women's golf incoming freshman
Jean Tyrrell (Leawood, Ks./Blue Valley North High School) added to her impressive amateur resume with a first-place finish at the Midwest Junior PGA Championship. As the Midwest Championship winner, Tyrrell earned an exemption into the Junior PGA Championship event next month.
In the event, presented by Under Armour and Nike and hosted at Drumm Farm Golf Club, Tyrrell carded rounds of 73 on both days to finish at 147, seven strokes ahead of the second-place finisher. She led the field of nine golfers through both rounds and finished at plus-two overall.
"These past couple days I really felt like my entire game came together and everything just clicked for me," explained Tyrrell after the event. "I am very excited to have the opportunity to return to Miramont in August and participate in the PGA Junior Championship."
With the event championship, Tyrrell will compete at the 2015 Junior PGA Championship Aug. 3-6 at Miramony Country Club in Bryan, Texas.
The Junior PGA Championship appearance will add to an already impressive history for Tyrrell. The future Eagles previously won the 2013 Missouri Women's Junior Championship and was the Kansas Class 6A High School Individual State Championship winner.
"I am thrilled for Jean to have the chance to play in the PGA Junior Championship again this year," added head coach
Sarah Trew. "In terms of junior golf, there are a handful of events on a national scale where you will see some of the best players from all over the country come to compete and this is one of those events. Over the past couple of days, she played very smart and steady and took advantage of opportunities. The Championship will be held a couple weeks before classes start and it will be a great way for Jean to end her summer and transition into collegiate play."
Tyrrell will join the Green and Blue this fall as a member of the women's golf team. In addition, the squad welcomes two newcomers in
Kelsy Holbert and
Madeline Marck-Sherk. The trio joins the returning roster that features three rising sophomores in
Gabrielle Brackrog,
Madison Easterbrook and
Ashley Kimbrough and three rising seniors in
Sara Detlefsen,
Rebecca VanEtten and
Mei Khuan Yong. '
The team will begin the 2015-16 campaign Sept. 7 at the Kansas State Invitational.
