Sherwin Continues Red-Hot Play As @FGCU_MGolf Finishes Opening Rounds

LOST PINES, Texas – FGCU junior Jake Sherwin continued his stalwart play in the regular-season finale as he shot rounds of 69 (-3) and 71 (-1) to finish -4 and in 5th place overall through the first 36 holes of the Jim West Intercollegiate at Wolfdancer Golf Club on Monday.

The tournament, hosted by Texas State, features 15 teams, and the Eagles – who are coming off a season-best-tying 4th-place finish – are in 12th place with a two-round 599 total. The Green and Blue trail 11th-place Central Arkansas by five shots as Saint Mary's (Calif.) leads the field following a 569 two-round total.

Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) – the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Golfer of the Week – continued his scorching spring as he has now posted five-straight rounds of even-par or better. The SWFL native started on hole 10 during each of his rounds and birdied the par-4 each time.

In the opening round Sherwin offset three bogeys on his front nine (back nine on the scorecard) with an eagle on the par-5 18th to go out in 35 (-1) before making birdies on holes 3, 5 and 6 and a bogey on hole 8 to come in with a 34 (-2).

During his second 18 of the day, Sherwin looked poised for a career-best round as he was -6 after an eagle on the par-5 3rd (his 12th hole of the round), but stumbled coming in with bogeys on three of his final six holes, in addition to a double bogey on the par-5 5th.

"Jake continued his good play this week, but as a team it's a very disappointing performance," stated FGCU head coach Eric Booker. "Keaton Jones is starting to play some good golf, posting a solid 72 in the afternoon. The guys overall struggled with allergies today with something the locals call "Cedar Fever," but even with that there's really no excuse for playing poorly in the afternoon. We now will look to regroup for a solid team effort in tomorrow's final round."

After finishing the opening 18 with a 296 total, the Eagles posted a 303 in the second round of the day. Jones (Kitchener, Ontario/ St. Mary's HS) continued his heady play for the Green and Blue as he opened with a 74 (+2) before responding with the aforementioned even-par round in the afternoon.

Jones, who opened on the par-4 13th each round, was consistent in his first 18 with a double bogey on the par-4 1st being the difference in his round, while in his second 18 of the day he recorded six bogeys, four birdies and an eagle.

While Sherwin is in the top 5 and Jones is tied for 24th overall, the Eagles unfortunately had no other player post a single-digit over-par day. Anthony Quintessenza (St. Petersburg, Fla./Northside Christian HS) shot rounds of 75-80, while Austin Schultz (Lakeland, Fla./Florida Southern College/Lee Virtual Instructional Program) carded 78-83 and Casper Howells (London, England/Bradfield College) signed for 82-80.

The 15-team field will play a final 18 holes on Tuesday. Live scoring will be available by clicking here or by visiting FGCUAthletics.com.

The teams are playing a new course this year as previously the tournament was held at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. The layout at Wolfdancer GC is a par 72 design which plays to 7,205 yards and most of the course resembles prairie land. The Arthur Hills design features vast elevation changes and heavily-wooded areas.

The Jim West Intercollegiate is the last of four tournaments the Eagles will play in a four-week span leading up to the A-Sun Championship Apr. 19-21 in Braselton, Ga.
