FORT MYERS, Fla. – Riding a program-best seven-match win streak, the FGCU men's tennis team (13-5, 4-0 A-Sun) welcomes No. 69 UNF (16-4, 5-0 A-Sun) this Saturday, Apr. 4, at 5 p.m. to The Nest. UNF is coming off of a victory over Stetson on Thursday by a 5-2 count. FGCU can clinch at least a share of its first-ever Atlantic Sun regular season title with a win against UNF.
The contest against the 69th-ranked Ospreys will also represent Country Club Day. FGCU is inviting all the country clubs from the Fort Myers-Naples area to come out to support the Eagles. The country club that has the most members present at the match will have the opportunity to have four of FGCU's players come to that club for an exhibition doubles contest.
Before the match, FGCU will honor a trio of seniors in
Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC), Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS (Bradenton, Fla.)) and
Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) for their contributions to program's success.
"We're really looking forward to celebrating our three seniors this weekend," head coach
CJ Weber said. "They have all had incredible careers here and have given so much to me and the program. I can't wait to honor them the way they deserve to be, and I'm looking forward to coaching them one more time on our home courts."
The Trends Of The Seniors• Between Bao, Beiler and Vives, they own a combined 11-1 singles record in the A-Sun with Beiler and Vives undefeated after four A-Sun contests.
• Vives owns a team-leading 15-2 dual-season singles record.
• After sitting out last season, Beiler is 8-4 in the spring, including a five-match win streak
• Bao, who had a slow fall season (3-10), is heating up in the spring, owing an 11-5 record in the spring.
• Vives has excelled in the doubles court with an 8-1 record with two different partners.
THE DECORATED DUOVives and
Bao are arguably one of the most successful duos in program history. Bao has produced solid and consistent results in the last three and half years for the Eagles. After transferring from the University of Southern California, Vives has established himself as one of the best players in the Southeast region in his three years as an Eagle.
FEELING THE GROOVEJunior
Ricky Ventura (Barcelona, Spain/University of Barcelona) is putting together an impressive spring slate for FGCU as the Barcelona, Spain native is currently 13-4 in singles play from the middle of the lineup. After falling against Christian Gonzalez Mendez of No. 31 Florida State in the season opener, Ventura has won seven matches in a row, highlighted by a dominating win over Bernard Tefel of then-No. 71 Miami with a score of 6-1, 6-0, before his win streak was snapped against Chris Barrus of UCF on Feb. 28. His seven-match win streak is the second longest in the program history, trailing only Vives' 14 match win streak set in the 2013-14 campaign.
WHO IS HE? MIKEY B!After a year of rehab from a right shoulder surgery, Beiler is making an admirable comeback for FGCU. The Eagles' primary No. 6 singles player is currently 8-3 on the spring dual-match season, highlighted by a dominating win over Andrew Rimington of No. 65 UCSB with a score of 6-1, 6-3. This past weekend Beiler was in a fine form, beating John Tougher of Lipscomb 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 and Adrian Isache of Northern Kentucky 6-1, 6-1.

SCOUTING UNFNo. 69 North Florida leads the A-Sun in total wins (16) and wins over nationally-ranked opponents (6). The Ospreys are dominating on the doubles court, and have won 14 out of their last 15 doubles points, with their lone loss coming against USC Upstate.
On the singles court, ITA No. 93 Jack Findel-Hawkins is the only nationally-ranked singles player in the entire A-Sun. However, the Ospreys' prized sophomore has not played a match since Mar. 13 against No. 54 Tulane. With Findel-Hawkins out of the lineup, Caio Gomes and Norbert Nemcsek have shared the No. 1 singles duty and hold a combined 4-3 record.
On the doubles court, UNF possesses a nationally-ranked pair in No. 52 Findel-Hawkins and Nemcsek. The 2014 NCAA Doubles Championship qualifiers posted a huge upset over No. 1 Ray Sarmiento and Yannick Hanfmann of Southern California, but Findel-Hawkins and Nemcsek have not played together since Mar. 15. The pairs of Yannick Zuern/Caio Gomes and Zach Goldberg/Lasse Muscheites have been sharing the No. 1 slot, going a combined 5-0.
