ANNISTON/GADSDEN, Ala. – A pair of even-par rounds of 72 from juniors
Jake Sherwin and
Austin Schultz supplied the FGCU men's golf team with two top-10 finishers as the Eagles moved up one spot following Monday's opening round to close the Grub Mart Intercollegiate in 4th place with a final-round 294 at Silver Lakes Golf Course on Tuesday.
Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) finished in a tie for 6th overall with a three-round 216 total (even par) following rounds of 76 and 68 on Monday. It represents his best finish of the year and also marks his third-straight top-10 finish. For the year he has now finished in the top 15 in five of six tournaments.
Schultz (Lakeland, Fla./Florida Southern College/Lee Virtual Instructional Program) tied for 10th with a 218 total (+2) after the transfer carded rounds of 75 and 71 on Monday. The finish is the best of his season, and also marks the first time this year two FGCU competitors have finished in the top 10 overall in the same tournament.
The junior duo paced FGCU to a season-best-tying 4th-place finish as the final-round 294 was the third-best of the day recorded. Host Jacksonville State won the seven-school, nine-team invitational for the sixth-straight year with a final-round 289 (851 three-round total). The Eagles (882 total) finished nine shots clear of fellow Atlantic Sun Conference member Northern Kentucky in sixth place and were five shots out of a top-three showing.
"The guys played well today outside of about three holes," said FGCU head coach
Eric Booker. "We could have really had a good team score, but overall we're improving and making progress."
Casper Howells (London, England/Bradfield College) capped a steady three rounds and gave the Eagles a third top-20 finisher as the sophomore carded a final-round 75 on Tuesday to conclude a 223 three-round total which included a 75 and a 73 on Monday. The total placed him in a tie for 18th place overall.
Jordan Miller (Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Christian HS) also signed for a 75 in the final round and finished two shots behind Howells with a 225 total and in a tie for 23rd overall.
Keaton Jones (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary's HS) rounded out the Eagles' scoring with an 82 to post a three-round 240 total.
This is the first time FGCU competed in the Grub Mart Intercollegiate, which began as the JSU–Silver Lakes Classic in 1994 and was originally intended to be a Division-II qualifier for the NCAA Tournament.
Silver Lakes Golf Course is one of the many courses along the famed Robert Trent Jones Trail, the largest golf course construction project ever attempted. After extensive renovations in 2011, the course boasts jaw-dropping views of the Appalachian Foothills, Lee's Lake and the original Trail Clubhouse, making for some of the most scenic golf in the world.
The Grub Mart Intercollegiate is the second of four tournaments the Eagles will play in a four-week span leading up to Atlantic Sun Conference Championship Apr. 19-21 in Braselton, Ga. The team will have an extremely quick turnaround as the Eagles will tee it up in FAU's Spring Break Invitational beginning on Friday.
