GREENSBORO, N.C. – After advancing to three final events at the 2015 NCAA Championships, the FGCU swimming & diving team (10-2, 3-0 CCSA) finished the prestigious meet at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in a mid-major best 26th place on Saturday, Mar., 21.
FGCU did not reach a final event on day three of the meet. However, the Eagles accumulated 37.5 points during the fastest meet in the world of collegiate swimming which is the most ever in program history, surpassing their total of 22 points at last year's meet.
The Eagles kicked the final day off with the 200-yard backstroke preliminaries which saw
Kira Toussaint (Amstelveen, Netherlands/Keizer Karel College) finish in 32nd place with a season-best time of 1:54.32.
Emma Svensson (Upsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) then narrowly missed going to the finals for the 100-yard freestyle touching in with a time of 48.69 in the prelims.
Katie Armitage (Bushey, United Kingdom/Queens School Bushey) then took the pool for the 200-yard breaststroke preliminaries and finished in 39th, touching the pads in a time of 2:17.92. Rounding out the day for the Eagles was the 400-yard freestyle relay team of
Sara Hamilton (Stonehaven, Scotland/Mackie Academy), Armitage, Toussaint and Svennsson. The relay team finished the preliminary event in 28th place with a time of 3:19.85.
"We had a few good swims but just missed finals today," said head coach
Neal Studd. "It was a good day just not quite as great as we have been having. What a tremendous year, and we significantly moved the program forward another huge step. I'm so proud of my girls, staff and everyone that has helped us achieve these new heights for the program."
After Svensson touched in 22.12 seconds to place 12th for the second-straight NCAA Championship which gave the Eagles 4.5 points after day one, the Green and Blue added 33 points on day two for a total of 37.5 points.
The Eagles kicked off the second day with a splash as the 200-yard relay team consisting of Toussaint, Armitage, Svensson and
Kristin Julien (San Fernand, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Stephen's College) touched the pads in 1:37.05 which was good for sixth place and FGCU's first-ever relay team to reach the final event at the NCAA Championships. In Friday night's final, the team picked up 22 points for the Green and Blue when it finished in eighth place with a time of 1:37.55.
Toussaint continued her excellent form in the 100-yard backstroke when she finished eighth in the prelims with a time 51.73 to qualify her for the second day's 'A' final. In the final, Toussaint finished eighth once again with a time of 52.92 to give the Eagles another 11 points.
