ATHENS, Ga. – Setting two records on Day One of the 2015 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Conference Championship was not enough for the FGCU Swimming & Diving (10-2, 3-0 CCSA) team as it set two more in Day Two at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens on the campus of the University of Georgia.
The Eagles lead the pack with 626 points while Liberty sits in second with a score of 461. Incarnate Word (407), Georgia Southern (383.5) and Gardern-Webb (340.5) round out the top five.
"Another special day for the whole team," said head coach
Neal Studd. "Another NCAA cut in the 200 free relay a 1-2 finish in the 500 free and then Emma [Svensson] becomes the first woman in the CCSA to go under 22 seconds in the 50 free. It's like breaking 10 seconds in the 100 meter dash, a very special moment for a young lady that is very special indeed!"
Senior
Emma Svensson (Upsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) finished first in the 50 yard freestyle with a CCSA, CCSA Championship meet and an FGCU program-record 21.98 which also qualifies her for an NCAA 'B' Cut. Svensson becomes the first swimmer in the history of the CCSA to swim the 50 free in under 22 seconds. Elaina Lanson of Georgia Southern finished in second place with a time of 22.95.
The Green and Blue continued their record-breaking pace when they placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a CCSA, CCSA Championship meet and an FGCU program-record 1:29.78. The team of Svensson
Kira Toussaint (Amstelveen, Netherlands/Keizer Karel College),
Kristin Julien (San Fernand, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Stephen's College), and
Rebecca Derogatis (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Indian River/Cardinal Gibbons HS) beat out the defending champions in Liberty who finished in second with a time of 1:30.29.
Lani Cabrera (Barbados/St. Ursala's Secondary School) continued the first place trend for the Eagles with a victory in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:51.50. Cabrera beat out teammate
Nina Schiffer (Dortmund, Germany/SG Dortmund) who finished with a time of 4:52.41.
Up next for the Eagles was the one-meter dive which saw
Cayla Collins (Largo, Fla./Osceola High School) finish in second place with a score of 275.10. Collins bounced back after finishing in eighth during the preliminaries. Kali Lents from the University of Incarnate Word won the event, receiving a score of 291.05.
The final event on the day was 200 yard IM which saw
Katie Armitage (Bushey, United Kingdom/Queens School Bushey) as the top Eagle in the event posting a time of 2:02.93 which was good for fifth place. Alona Kyselova from Incarnate Word won the event in a time of 2:01.71.
